Summary
Paul explains that he is not overstepping his God-given boundaries, because the Corinthians fall within the sphere of ministry God assigned to him through the gospel. He refuses to boast in work done by others or beyond the limits God has set, but expresses hope that as the Corinthians’ faith grows, his ministry among them will expand further, even to regions beyond.
Paul emphasizes that true boasting is not self-commendation but boasting in the Lord, since it is not the one who commends himself who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends.
Teaching:
Paul always carried out his ministry within the limits set by God. This was not merely an expression of humility, but a posture of faith that defines a true servant of God.
Paul preached the gospel within the sphere God had given him, and he desired that the gospel would grow and bear rich fruit among the Corinthians. A distinctive feature of Paul’s gospel is his frequent emphasis on living “in the Lord.”
To be “in the Lord” means to be someone whom the Lord Himself approves and commends as right. We must learn the gospel well, allow it to abound in our lives, and see it expand through us to others.
