No one can fail who asks to reach the truth.

진리에 도달하기를 요청하는 자는 그 누구도 실패할 수 없다.

1 Failure is all about you while you seek for goals that cannot be achieved. You look for permanence in the impermanent, for love where there is none, for safety in the midst of danger, immortality within the darkness of the dream of death. Who could succeed where contradiction is the setting of his searching and the place to which he comes to find stability?

1. 달성할 수 없는 목표를 구하는 한, 네가 맞닥뜨릴 것은 온통 실패뿐이다. 너는 일시적인 것에서 영속성을, 사랑이 없는 곳에서 사랑을, 위험의 한가운데서 안전을, 어두운 죽음의 꿈에서 불멸성을 찾는다. 모순을 무대로 하여 안정을 추구한다면, 그 누가 성공할 수 있겠는가?

2 Goals which are meaningless are not attained. There is no way to reach them, for the means by which you strive for them are meaningless as they are. Who can use such senseless means and hope through them to gain in anything? Where can they lead? And what could they achieve that offers any hope of being real?

2. 무의미한 목표는 이룰 수 없다. 그 목표에 도달할 방법은 없다. 목표를 얻기 위한 수단도 목표 자체만큼이나 무의미하기 때문이다. 이렇게 무의미한 수단을 가지고 과연 무엇이라도 얻기를 바랄 수 있겠는가? 그 수단이 어디로 인도할 수 있겠는가? 그 수단을 가지고 과연 실제일 가망이 조금이라도 있는 것을 이룰 수 있겠는가?

3 Pursuit of the imagined leads to death because it is the search for nothingness, and while you seek for life you ask for death. You look for safety and security while in your heart you pray for danger and protection for the little dream you made.

3. 상상된 것에 대한 추구는 죽음으로 이어진다. 그것은 무에 대한 추구기 때문이다. 그리고 너는 생명을 구하면서 죽음을 달라고 요청한다. 너는 안전과 보호를 찾으면서 속으로는 위험을 달라고, 네가 만든 하찮은 꿈을 지켜달라고 기도한다.

4 Yet searching is inevitable here. For this you came, and you will surely do the thing you came for. But the world can not dictate the goal for which you search unless you give it power to do so. Otherwise, you still are free to choose a goal that lies beyond the world and every worldly thought and one which comes to you from an idea relinquished yet remembered, old yet new—an echo of a heritage forgot, yet holding everything you really want.

4. 하지만 여기에서 추구는 불가피하다. 너는 추구를 위해 여기에 왔으며, 분명 네가 하기 위해 온 것을 할 것이다. 그러나 세상은 네가 추구할 목표를 지시할 수 없다. 네가 그럴 힘을 세상에 부여하지 않는 한 말이다. 그렇지 않으면 너는 여전히 네가 추구할 목표를 자유로이 선택할 수 있다. 그것은 세상과 모든 세상적인 생각 너머에 있는 목표, 네가 포기했지만 기억하고 있으며 오래되었지만 새로운 아이디어, 즉 네가 잊었지만 진정으로 원하는 모든 것을 간직한 유산의 메아리로부터 너에게 도달하는 목표다.

5 Be glad that search you must. Be glad as well to learn you search for Heaven and must find the goal you really want. No one can fail to want this goal and reach it in the end. God's Son cannot seek vainly, though he try to force delay, deceive himself, and think that it is hell he seeks. When he is wrong, he finds correction; when he wanders off, he is led back to his appointed task.

5. 네가 추구할 수밖에 없다는 것에 기뻐하라. 그리고 네가 천국을 추구하며, 진정 원하는 목표를 발견할 수밖에 없다는 사실을 배우는 것에 기뻐하라. 이러한 목표를 원하면서 마침내 거기에 도달하지 못하는 자는 아무도 없다. 하느님의 아들은 헛되이 구할 수 없다. 그가 비록 지연을 강제하고, 그 자신을 속이며, 자신이 구하는 것이 지옥이라고 생각하려고 애쓰더라도 말이다. 그는 틀렸을 때 교정을 발견하고, 길을 잃고 방황할 때 자신에게 주어진 과제로 인도되어 돌아오게 된다.

6 No one remains in hell, for no one can abandon his Creator nor affect His perfect, timeless, and unchanging Love. You will find Heaven. Everything you seek but this will fall away, yet not because it has been taken from you. It will go because you do not want it. You will reach the goal you really want as certainly as God created you in sinlessness.

6. 그 누구도 지옥에 남아있지 않다. 그 누구도 자신의 창조주를 버릴 수 없으며, 그분의 완벽하고 무시간적이며 변함없는 사랑에 영향을 줄 수도 없기 때문이다. 너는 천국을 발견할 것이다. 그 밖에 네가 구하는 모든 것은 사라지겠지만, 네가 그것들을 빼앗겨서가 아니다. 그것들은 네가 원하지 않기 때문에 사라질 것이다. 하느님이 너를 죄 없이 창조하신 것만큼이나 확실하게, 너는 네가 진정으로 원하는 목표에 도달할 것이다.

7 Why wait for Heaven? It is here today. Time is the great illusion it is past or in the future. Yet this cannot be if it is where God wills His Son to be. How could the Will of God be in the past or yet to happen? What He wills is now, without a past and wholly futureless. It is as far removed from time as is a tiny candle from a distant star, or what you chose from what you really want.

7. 왜 천국을 기다리는가? 천국은 오늘 여기에 있다. 과거로 가버렸든 미래에 있든, 시간은 거대한 환상이다. 그러나 그것이 만약 하느님이 당신의 아들이 있기를 뜻하시는 곳이라면, 그럴 수 없다. 하느님의 뜻이 어찌 과거에 있거나 아직 일어나지 않을 수 있겠는가? 하느님이 뜻하시는 것은 지금이며, 과거도 없고 미래도 없다. 작은 촛불이 멀리 있는 별과 떨어져 있듯이, 혹은 네가 선택한 것이 네가 진정 원하는 것과 떨어져 있듯이, 하느님이 뜻하시는 것은 시간과 아주 멀리 떨어져 있다.

8 Heaven remains your one alternative to this strange world you made and all its ways—its shifting patterns and uncertain goals, its painful pleasures, and its tragic joys. God made no contradictions. What denies its own existence and attacks itself is not of Him. He did not make two minds, with Heaven as the glad effect of one and earth the other's sorry outcome that is Heaven's opposite in every way.

8. 천국은 네가 만든 이 이상한 세상과 그것의 모든 방식들, 그것의 변화무쌍한 양상들과 불확실한 목표들, 그것의 고통스러운 쾌락과 비극적인 기쁨에 대한 유일한 대안으로 남아있다. 하느님은 어떤 모순도 만들지 않으셨다. 자신의 존재를 부정하고 자기 자신을 공격하는 것은 무엇이든 하느님에게서 나온 것이 아니다. 한 마음은 천국이라는 기쁜 결과를 낳고 다른 마음은 모든 면에서 천국과 반대인 땅이라는 아쉬운 결과를 낳는 두 마음, 하느님은 이런 두 마음을 만들지 않으셨다.

9 God does not suffer conflict. Nor is His creation split in two. How could it be His Son could be in hell when God Himself established him in Heaven? Could he lose what the Eternal Will has given him to be his home forever? Let us not try longer to impose an alien will upon His single purpose. He is here because He wills to be, and what He wills is present now beyond the reach of time.

9. 하느님은 갈등하지 않으신다. 하느님의 창조물도 둘로 쪼개지지 않았다. 하느님이 몸소 당신의 아들을 천국에 굳건히 자리잡게 하셨거늘, 그가 어찌 지옥에 있을 수 있겠는가? 영원한 뜻이 아들에게 주어서 영원히 그의 집이 되게 한 것을 그가 과연 잃을 수 있겠는가? 하느님의 유일한 목적 위에 더 이상 이질적인 뜻을 부과하려 하지 말자. 하느님은 여기에 계신다. 하느님은 존재하기를 뜻하시며, 그분이 뜻하시는 것은 시간이 미치지 못하는 지금 현존하기 때문이다.

10 Today we will not choose a paradox in place of truth. How could the Son of God make time to take away the Will of God? He thus denies himself and contradicts what has no opposite. He thinks he made a hell opposing Heaven and believes that he abides in what does not exist, while Heaven is the place he cannot find. Leave foolish thoughts like these behind today, and turn your mind to true ideas instead.

10. 오늘 우리는 진리 대신에 모순을 선택하지 않겠다. 하느님의 아들이 어찌 하느님의 뜻을 제거하려고 시간을 만들 수 있겠는가? 그는 이런 식으로 자기 자신을 부정하며, 반대되는 것이 없는 것을 반박한다. 그는 자신이 천국에 반대되는 지옥을 만들었다고 생각하며, 자신은 존재하지 않는 곳에 사는 반면 천국은 자신이 찾을 수 없는 곳이라고 믿는다. 오늘 이와 같은 어리석은 생각을 뒤로하고 떠나라. 그 대신 너의 마음을 진정한 아이디어들로 돌려라.

11 No one can fail who asks to reach the truth, and it is truth we ask to reach today. We will devote ten minutes to this goal three times today, and we will ask to see the rising of the real world to replace the foolish images that we held dear, with true ideas arising in the place of thoughts which have no meaning, no effect, and neither source nor substance in the truth.

11. 진리에 도달하기를 요청하는 자는 그 누구도 실패할 수 없다. 그리고 진리야말로 우리가 오늘 도달하기를 요청하는 것이다. 우리는 오늘 이 목표에 10분씩 세 번의 시간을 바친다. 그리고 우리는 실재세상이 떠올라 우리가 소중히 간직한 어리석은 이미지들을 대체하고, 진리 안에서 아무런 의미도 결과도 없으며 근원도 실체도 없는 생각들 대신에 진정한 아이디어가 일어나는 것을 보게 해달라고 요청할 것이다.

12 This we acknowledge as we start upon our practice periods. Begin with this:

12. 연습을 시작하면서 우리는 다음의 내용을 인정한다. 다음과 같이 시작하라:

13 I ask to see a different world and think

A different kind of thought from those I made.

The world I seek I did not make alone,

The thoughts I want to think are not my own.

13. 나는 내가 만든 세상과 다른 세상을 보고,

내가 만든 생각과 다른 종류의 생각을 생각하게 해달라고 요청합니다.

내가 구하는 세상은 나 홀로 만들지 않았으며,

내가 생각하기를 원하는 생각들은 나 자신의 것이 아닙니다.

14 For several minutes watch your mind and see, although your eyes are closed, the senseless world you think is real. Review the thoughts as well which are compatible with such a world and which you think are true. Then let them go, and sink below them to the holy place where they can enter not. There is a door beneath them in your mind which you could not completely lock to hide what lies beyond.

14. 몇 분 동안 마음을 지켜보면서, 비록 눈은 감고 있지만 네가 실재한다고 생각하는 의미 없는 세상을 바라보라. 이러한 세상과 양립하고, 네가 참이라고 생각하는 생각들도 잘 살펴보라. 그런 다음 그것들을 보내버리고, 그 아래 그것들이 들어올 수 없는 거룩한 장소로 침잠해 들어가라. 네 마음 안에는 그것들 아래로 문이 하나 있는데, 너는 그 너머의 것을 감추려고 그 문을 완전히 걸어 잠글 수는 없었다.

15 Seek for that door and find it. But before you try to open it, remind yourself no one can fail who asks to reach the truth, and it is this request you make today. Nothing but this has any meaning now; no other goal is valued now nor sought; nothing before this door you really want, and only what lies past it do you seek.

15. 그 문을 구하고 찾아내라. 하지만 그 문을 열려고 시도하기 전에, 진리에 도달하기를 요청하는 자는 그 누구도 실패할 수 없으며, 네가 오늘 바로 이런 요청을 하고 있음을 기억하라. 지금, 이것 말고는 아무런 의미도 없다. 지금, 다른 어떤 목표도 가치 있게 여기거나 추구하지 말라. 너는 이 문 앞에 있는 그 무엇도 정말로 원하지 않으며, 오로지 그 너머에 있는 것만을 구한다.

16 Put out your hand and see how easily the door swings open with your one intent to go beyond it. Angels light the way, so that all darkness vanishes and you are standing in a light so bright and clear that you can understand all things you see. A tiny moment of surprise, perhaps, will make you pause before you realize the world you see before you in the light reflects the truth you knew and did not quite forget in wandering away in dreams.

16. 손을 뻗어서, 그 너머로 가겠다는 의도 하나로 문이 얼마나 쉽게 활짝 열리는지 보라. 천사들이 길을 비춰 모든 어둠이 사라지고, 너는 너무도 찬란하고 뚜렷한 빛 속에 서있기에 네가 보는 모든 것을 이해할 수 있다. 어쩌면 너는 놀라움에 잠시 멈출 것이며, 그리고는 네 앞에 보이는 빛 속의 세상은 네가 꿈속에서 방랑하는 동안에도 알았으며, 아직도 완전히 잊지는 않은 진리를 반영한다는 것을 깨달을 것이다.

17 You cannot fail today. There walks with you the Spirit Heaven sent you that you might approach this door some day and through His aid slip effortlessly past it to the light. Today that day has come. Today God keeps His ancient promise to His holy Son, as does His Son remember his to Him. This is a day of gladness, for we come to the appointed time and place where you will find the goal of all your searching here and all the seeking of the world, which ends together as you pass beyond the door.

17. 너는 오늘 실패할 수 없다. 천국이 네게 보낸 성령이 너와 함께 걷고 있기에, 너는 어느 날엔가 이 문에 다다를 것이며, 그의 도움으로 미끄러지듯 쉽사리 지나 빛으로 나아갈 수 있다. 오늘 그날이 왔다. 오늘 하느님이 당신의 거룩한 아들과 맺은 태곳적 약속을 지키시고, 아들도 하느님과 맺은 약속을 기억한다. 오늘은 기쁨의 날이다. 우리는 예정된 시간과 장소에 도달하기 때문이다. 그곳에서 너는 네가 이곳에서 한 모든 추구와 세상의 모든 추구의 목표를 발견할 것이다. 그리고 네가 그 문을 지나감에 따라, 그 모든 추구는 한꺼번에 끝난다.

18 Remember often that today should be a time of special gladness, and refrain from dismal thoughts and meaningless laments. Salvation's time has come. Today is set by Heaven Itself to be a time of grace for you and for the world. If you forget this happy fact, remind yourself with this:

18. 오늘은 특별히 기쁜 때가 되어야 함을 자주 기억하고, 울적한 생각이나 무의미한 한탄을 삼가라. 구원의 때가 왔다. 오늘은 너와 세상이 은혜받는 때로 천국이 정해놓은 날이다. 이러한 행복한 사실을 잊을 때는 다음의 말을 기억하라:

19 Today I seek and find all that I want.

My single purpose offers it to me.

No one can fail who asks to reach the truth.

19. 오늘 나는 내가 원하는 모든 것을 구하여 발견한다.

나의 유일한 목적이 나에게 그것을 제공한다.

진리에 도달하기를 요청하는 자는 그 누구도 실패할 수 없다.

천국은 오늘 여기에 있다. \

하느님이 뜻하시는 것은 지금이며,
과거에도 없고
미래도 없다.

너는 오늘 실패할 수 없다.
천국이 네게 보낸 성령이 너와 함께 걷고 있기에,
너는 어느 날엔가 이 문에 다다를 것이며,
그의 도움으로 미끄러지듯
쉽사리 지나 빛으로 나아갈 수 있다.

진리에 도달하기를 요청하는 자는
