뉴튼-존은 1980년 <Xanadu>라는 뮤지컬 영화에 출연하면서, 영국 록그룹 Electric Light Orchestra와 함께 영화 OST 제작에도 참여합니다. 그리고 영화는 흥행에 실패하지만 영화 사운드트랙 앨범은 상업적으로 성공을 거둬, 타이틀곡인 Xanadu와 Magic, Suddenly가 각각 미국 빌보드 차트 8위, 1위, 20위에 오릅니다.
