Summary:
After recounting many external dangers and hardships, Paul adds that an ongoing burden presses on him every day: continual concern for all the churches. He describes how deeply he shares in the condition of others—when someone is weak, he feels that weakness; when someone is led into sin, he burns with distress. Because of this, he says that if he must boast, he will boast in what shows his weakness.
He then solemnly calls on God—the Father of the Lord Jesus, who is blessed forever—as his witness that he is not lying. Finally, Paul gives a concrete example of vulnerability and escape: in Damascus, the official under King Aretas was guarding the city to seize him, but Paul was lowered in a basket through an opening in the wall, and in that way he escaped from their hands.
Teaching:
“Another gospel” is not the gospel of Christ—it is a message that distorts and undermines the gospel of Christ. Paul is firmly convinced that the gospel he preaches is the word of revelation given by Christ.
Paul is saying that if he must boast, he will boast in his weakness—laying it before God to seek grace—and he will not hide it from the Corinthians. In other words, he is confessing that he is still a person who needs God’s grace.
“The Lord I believe in is my Savior and my Father God. Even if people do not recognize me, God knows me—and the God who knows me is the One who saves me.” Lay everything down, boast in your weakness, and live by the grace of God.
