Filmmaker Na Woon-gyu: Singing the Soul of a Nation
Na Woon-gyu was 25 years old when he directed, wrote and starred in “Arirang,” the silent film that opened at a theater in 1926.
“Arirang” is a film that consoled and comforted the people of Korea at a time when they were oppressed by Japanese colonial rule. It’s a masterful film that made its mark in the history of Korean cinema. Na Woon-gyu even wrote the lyrics to the film’s theme song, “Bonjo Arirang,” based on melodies of Korea’s most famous “Arirang” folk songs.
Na Woon-gyu was able to bring this patriotic work of art to life because of his own experiences in the fight for freedom. In his youth, he was arrested for his participation in Korea’s March 1st Independence Movement and other independence activities.
Then he brought the resistance and hope to his people via the silver screen. We introduce you to the independence fighter and genius filmmaker, Na Woon-gyu.
