Dokdo Sea Lion - A History of Tragedy
At the northern tip of Dokdo Island, there is a uniquely named rock called 'Gajebawi.'
The name ‘Gaje’ refers to the now-extinct Dokdo ‘Gangchi’ (sea lion).
Historically, Dokdo has been a paradise for sea lions, as it offers numerous resting spots
and abundant food due to the convergence point of cold and warm currents.
Additionally, the characteristic of Korean people, who sought symbiosis without hunting marine mammals, contributed to Dokdo becoming the largest habitat for sea lions.
In Japan at the time, sea lions were a “luxury commodity,” worth 10 times the price of a cow.
Japanese fisherman Nakai Yozaburo embarked on hunting the Dokdo sea lions in hopes of striking it rich.
Due to the ruthless overfishing by the Japanese, approximately 15,000 Dokdo sea lions were killed over a span of 40 years, and they were ultimately declared extinct in 1994, completely disappearing from the Earth.
This tragedy occurred because Japan illegally incorporated Dokdo following Nakai's petition.
Japan officially recognized Dokdo as a Korean territory after Ahn Yongbok's dispute regarding Ulleungdo Island in 1693. However, while preparing for a full-scale invasion of the continent in the Russo-Japanese War, Japan recognized the military significance of Dokdo and proceeded to pillage it.
Japan's claim to Dokdo is based on the hunting of these sea lions, which is no different from anti-civilizational criminal acts.
What they need to do is to take international accountability, not continue an absurd claim of sovereignty over Dokdo.
The history of tragedy must not be repeated.
South Korea is currently conducting genomic research, education, and restoration projects using the excavated residual bones of the Dokdo sea lion.
Until the day we see the Dokdo sea lions again, we need to continue showing attention and interest.
Please remember this, as we celebrate Dokdo Day on October 25.
