천성경 (증) - 158.참인간의 마음과 몸


1 피조세계에는 두 축이 있습니다. 두 축이 있는데, 보이는 축과 보이지 않는 축, 이중구조로 되어 있습니다. 하나의 주체를 중심삼고 돌아가는데 그 주체 자신도 돌아갑니다. 몸과 마음이 주고받으면 돌게 되는 것과 같습니다. 모든 존재물은 이와 같은 원칙에 의하여 존재합니다. 마찬가지로 타락한 인간세계에서의 복귀의 길도 축을 고치지 않으면 안 됩니다. 인간에게 몸의 중심은 마음입니다. 마음을 중심삼고 몸이 연결되어 있기 때문에 몸은 마음을 중심삼고 도는 것입니다. 마음의 명령에 몸이 움직입니다. 마음이 ‘동으로 가라!’ 하면 동으로 가야 되고, ‘서로 가라!’ 하면 서로 가야 됩니다.

마음과 몸이 뭐냐
2 마음은 뭐냐? 종적인 아버지, 창조주 아버지의 사랑을 이어받은 것이 마음입니다. 그리고 횡적인 부모의 사랑을 통해서 이어받은 것이 이 몸입니다. 그렇기 때문에 마음은 종적인 나요, 몸은 횡적인 나입니다. 주체대상관계입니다. 환경적으로 나라는 존재에 있어서 비로소 마음과 몸이 초점을 맞춤으로써 종횡의 일치가 벌어지는 것입니다. 사랑을 중심삼고 종횡에 있어서 종적인 플러스와 횡적인 마이너스가 90각도를 초점을 맞추는 이상적 결착점이 중앙점입니다. 중앙점은 아무것도 없는데, 모든 힘은 그 한 초점을 통하는 것입니다. 반대가 없습니다. 점프해, 다이빙해 들어옵니다. 태풍같이 들어옵니다. 그것을 막을 도리가 없습니다. 그래서 하나님은 지혜의 왕입니다. 이 중심은 진공상태입니다. 진공상태에서는 끌어당기는 힘이 그것에 비례해서 몇 백배 강해집니다. 그렇기 때문에 오라 하지 않는다고 해도 끌려오게 마련입니다. 당기는 힘이 강하니까 그 앞에 있는 것은 태산이든 무엇이든 다 까뭉개는 것입니다.

3 마음은 종적인 주인입니다. 하나님의 핏줄을 이어받았기 때문에 종적인 주인입니다. 몸은 완성한 아담, 횡적인 핏줄을 받은 나입니다. 나에게는 두 주인이 있습니다. 그중에 하나는 수직으로 이어받은 하나님의 혈통입니다. 하나님의 혈통만 있어서는 안 됩니다. 하나님의 혈통을 중심삼은 수직 앞에 가로질러서 수평선이 연결되어야 합니다. 그래서 갈라진 동서남북이 중앙으로 통할 수 있어야 됩니다. 수직 앞에 수평선이 연결되어 90각도가 되는 것입니다. 동쪽 서쪽 남쪽 북쪽이 90각도, 수직을 중심삼고 거리가 같은 원형을 이룰 때는 전부 똑같습니다.

4 마음과 몸을 보면 마음은 주체요 몸은 대상입니다. 이것 둘이 싸우게 됐는데, 왜 싸우게 됐느냐? 몸이 플러스가 되었기 때문입니다. 주체 되는 마음 앞에 몸이 영원한 대상이 되어야 할 텐데, 이것이 또 다른 주체가 되었습니다. 그것이 타락입니다.

5 하나님의 사랑이 수직적 사랑이라면 수평적 사랑이 있어야 되는데, 그 수평적 사랑은 누가 차지할 수 있느냐? 누가 차지해야 될 사랑의 자리이겠습니까? 그 자리는 타락하지 않고 완성되어 본연의 참사랑과 화합되어야 할 참된 조상의 자리입니다. 그렇게 해서 하나되었더라면 그 사랑을 통해서 하나님의 마음과 몸을 닮고, 어머니 아버지의 마음과 몸을 닮아 태어날 수 있었을 것입니다. 이것이 나라는 존재입니다.

6 마음은 수직적 나이고, 몸은 수평적 나입니다. 수직적 부모와 수평적 부모가 함께 나를 만들어 놓은 것입니다. 그들로부터 참사랑 참생명, 나아가 참혈통을 이어받은 것입니다. 내가 그렇게 된 것입니다. 참사랑으로 하나되어 이뤄진 것이 나입니다. 나는 우주의 중심이요 사랑을 대표한 중심입니다. 또한 공식의 중심입니다. 나는 수평적 사랑의 중심존재라는 것입니다. 수평적 사랑과 수직적 사랑이 합해져서 하나가 된 참사랑의 중심존재입니다. 그것이 바로 나입니다.

7 나를 두고 볼 때, 마음은 종적 면을 대표하고 몸은 횡적 면을 대표합니다. 마음이 바르다, 곧다는 말을 합니다. 바르다는 것은 뭐냐 하면 수직으로도 맞고 수평으로도 맞는다는 것입니다. 세워 놓으면 수직선으로도 맞고 뉘어 놓으면 수평선으로도 맞는다는 것입니다. 마음이 종적이라면 몸은 횡적입니다. 그러므로 마음이 원하는 대로 몸과 잘 주고받게 될 때 마음의 고통이 없게 됩니다. 그럴 때 잘 자라는 것입니다. 육체적 고통도 고통이지만 마음의 고통이 더 무섭습니다. 그것은 종적인 것이 중심이 되기 때문입니다.

8 우리 몸과 마음은 처해 있는 위치가 다릅니다. 마음은 종적인 것이요, 몸은 횡적인 것입니다. 이것이 하나되지 않고는, 수평이 되지 않고는 본질적인 하나님의 절대적인 사랑의 방향에 일치될 수 있는 수직을 그을 수 없습니다. 이 수직은 둘이 아니라 하나입니다. 그러므로 제일 노력해야 될 것은, 더욱이나 신앙생활을 하는 우리가 노력해야 될 것은 마음을 중심삼고 어떻게 몸을 하나 만드느냐 하는 것입니다.

9 사람은 몸과 마음의 이중으로 되어 있는데, 마음은 종적인 면을 대신하고 있고 몸은 횡적인 면을 대신하고 있습니다. ‘저 사람은 마음이 바르다.’라고 할 때 그것은 수평을 중심삼고 봤다는 것입니다. 수직으로 보았다는 말이 아닙니다. ‘그 사람은 바른 사람이다.’라고 할 때, 그 ‘바른 사람’이라고 하는 것은 수평을 두고 하는 말입니다. 불교에서는 참선을 통해 마음이 무엇인가를 연구해 나왔지만, 아직도 마음이 무엇인지를 모릅니다. 마음은 종적인 나입니다. 또 몸은 횡적인 나입니다. 그래서 그 횡적인 ‘나’와 종적인 ‘나’가 통일되는 자리에서 나라고 하는 인격이 완성됩니다. 무엇을 중심삼고 이 종적인 것과 횡적인 것이 통일될 수 있느냐? 공명될 수 있는 본질을 통해 하나되는 데서 완성을 논할 수 있습니다. 그것은 돈도 아니요, 지식도 아니요, 권력도 아닙니다. 오로지 하나님의 참사랑에 의해서만이 공명되는 것입니다.

10 몸은 수평을 상징하고 마음은 수직을 상징합니다. 수직과 수평이 90각도를 갖춰야 됩니다. 이 90각도 넷이 합해서 360도가 되어야 합니다. 그러지 않고는 완전한 사람이 못 됩니다. 그래서 수직을 중심삼고 하나되어야 됩니다. 몸과 마음이 하나되는 데는 몸을 중심삼고 하나될 수 없습니다. 마음이 이동할 수 없습니다. 몸이 조종해서 마음, 수직 앞에 완전히 하나될 수 있는, 90각도에 하나될 수 있는 나를 찾아야 됩니다. 그 나라는 것은 사람이 성숙해서 비로소 사랑을 알게 될 때 찾아지는 것입니다. 동쪽에서 사는 사람이 담을 넘어 서쪽을 바라보고, 서쪽에 사는 사람이 담을 넘어 동쪽을 바라볼 수 있으려면 성숙해야 됩니다.

11 마음은 천지의 이치를 따라서 종적인 인격관을 대신합니다. 그렇기 때문에 마음은 높습니다. 마음이 넓다고 하지만 넓다는 개념 가운데는 높다는 개념이 들어가 있습니다. 여러분의 마음은 넓고도 높다는 것입니다. 바른 데는 어디까지나 하늘 끝에서부터 땅 끝까지 수직이 되어야 합니다. 운동하는 세계, 원형의 대우주권 내도 수직은 하나입니다. 하나여야 됩니다. 모든 만물이 바라고 모든 존재들이 이상으로 바라는 수직이 있다면 그것은 하나라야 됩니다. 그것이 참사랑입니다. 참사랑이라는 수직은 이 우주에 둘이 있어서는 안 됩니다. 동양 사람이나 서양 사람이나, 과거·현재·미래를 막론하고 참사랑의 수직은 오로지 하나입니다. 그 수직 앞에 하나님도 달려 있고, 그 하나의 수직 앞에 사랑의 작용이 벌어지기 때문에 하나님이 바라는 이상도 그 수직권 내에서 연결되는 것입니다. 그러한 축이, 그러한 수직이 이 땅 위에 안 생겨났다는 것입니다.

12 우리는 흔히 마음이 곧다는 말을 합니다. 똑바로 수직으로 선 것을 곧다고 합니다. 나무도 옆으로 기울어진 것은 곧다고 하지 않습니다. 마음이 곧다는 것은 수직으로 서 있다는 뜻입니다. 그래서 사람은 서서 다니는 것입니다. 수직이 되어야 곧은 것입니다. 자기 마음을 완전히 수직이 되게 해야 됩니다. 거기에 몸이 수평선이 되는 것입니다. 이렇게 수직과 수평이 우리 내부에서 이루어질 때에 수직에서 당겨주는 힘과 수평에서 밀어주는 힘이 균형을 취하게 되어 구심력과 원심력이 형성됩니다.

13 우리는 몸과 마음이 있습니다. 그 몸 마음이 하나됐을 때는 고통을 안 느낍니다. 몸 마음이 하나 안 돼 있을 때, 수평선이 안 되게 될 때 고통을 느낍니다. 마음이 높아도 야단이고 몸이 높아도 야단입니다. 그렇지만 몸 마음이 수평선에 있게 될 때는 고통을 안 느끼는 것입니다. 몸 마음이 수평선일 때는 고통을 안 느끼지만, 몸과 마음이 수직이 됐을 때는 작동하는 것입니다. 약동한다는 것입니다. 기쁘다는 것입니다. 그렇기 때문에 전부가 수직을 맞춰야 됩니다. 수평과 수직이 언제나 조화를 이루어야 됩니다.

14 천국은 남자 여자의 사랑에서 시작합니다. 하나님의 사랑을 중심삼고 수직선을 중심으로 해서 수평선이 통일되어 있는 곳이 본연의 천국입니다. 하나님이 계시는데, 그 가운데서 남자 여자가 핵이 되어서, 몸과 마음이 같이 딱 둥글어지는 것입니다. 거기서 마음은 수직적인 나입니다. 몸은 수평적인 나입니다. 명확한 것입니다. 수직적인 마음은 하나님이고, 수평적인 몸은 참부모입니다. 그것이 하나되는 것입니다.

15 마음은 보이지는 않지만 수직적입니다. 몸은 보이지만 수평적입니다. 가정은 대우주의 축소체입니다. 사람 가운데 영계가 있습니다. 영이 들어와 있습니다. 그것이 마음입니다. 보이지 않는 마음, 보이는 몸은 세계의 대표입니다. 둘이 중심을 중심삼고 완전히 사방을 돌아다녀도 한자리를 떠나지 않으면 이상적인 사람이 됩니다. 보이지 않는 마음과 보이는 몸이 참사랑의 핵을 중심으로 하나가 될 때, 이것이 이상적인 남자와 여자, 개인의 완성입니다.

天聖経 (增) - 158.真の人間の心と体

1　被造世界には二つの軸があります。二つの軸があるのですが、見える軸と見えない軸の二重構造になっています。一つの主体を中心として回り、その主体自 身も回るのです。体と心が授け受けすれば、回るようになるのと同じです。すべての存在物は、このような原則によって存在します。同様に、堕落した人間世界 における復帰の道も、軸を直さなければなりません。人間において体の中心は心です。心を中心として体が連結されているため、体は心を中心として回るので す。心の命令に体が動くのです。心が「東に行きなさい！」と言えば東に行かなければならず、「西に行きなさい！」と言えば西に行かなければなりません。

心と体とは何か
2　心とは何でしょうか。縦的であり創造主である父の愛を受け継いだものが心です。そして、横的な父母の愛を通して受け継いだものがこの体です。そのた め、心は縦的な「私」であり、体は横的な私です。主体と対象の関係です。私という存在において心と体が焦点を合わせることにより、初めて環境的に縦横の一 致が起きるのです。

愛を中心として、縦横において、縦的なプラスと横的なマイナスが九〇度で焦点を合わせる理想的な結着点が中央点です。中央点には何もないのですが、すべて の力がその一つの焦点を通るのです。反対がありません。ジャンプ、ダイビングして入ってくるのです。台風のように入ってきます。それを防ぐ方法がありませ ん。ですから、神様は知恵の王です。

この中心は真空状態です。真空状態では、引き寄せる力がそれに比例し、何百倍も強くなります。そのため、「来なさい」と言わなくても、引き寄せられるよう になっているのです。引く力が強いので、その前にあるものは高い山でも何でも、すべて崩すのです。

3　心は、縦的な主人です。神様の血統を受け継いだので、縦的な主人です。体は、完成したアダム、横的な血統を受けた「私」です。私には二人の主人がいる のです。そのうちの一人は、垂直に受け継いだ神様の血統です。神様の血統だけがあってもいけません。神様の血統を中心とした垂直の前を横切って、水平線が 連結されなければなりません。それで、分かれた東西南北が中央に通じることができなければならないのです。垂直の前に水平線が連結され、九〇度になるので す。東、西、南、北が九〇度、垂直を中心として距離が同じ円形を形成するときは、すべて同じなのです。

4　心と体を見れば、心は主体であり、体は対象です。この二つが闘うのですが、なぜ闘うようになったのですか。体がプラスになったからです。主体である心 の前に、体が永遠な対象にならなければならないのですが、これがもう一つの主体になりました。それが堕落です。

5　神様の愛が垂直的な愛だとすれば、水平的な愛がなければなりませんが、その水平的な愛は誰が占めることができますか。誰が占めるべき愛の場所でしょう か。その場は、堕落せずに完成し、本然の真の愛と和合しなければならない真の先祖の位置です。そのようにして一つになっていたならば、その愛を通し、神様 の心と体に似て、父母の心と体に似て生まれることができたでしょう。これが「私」という存在です。

6　心は垂直な「私」であり、体は水平な「私」です。垂直の父母と水平の父母が一緒に私を造ったのです。彼らから真の愛、真の生命、さらには真の血統を受 け継いだのです。私はそのようになっています。真の愛で一つになって造られたのが私です。私は宇宙の中心であり、愛を代表した存在です。また公式の中心で す。私は、水平の愛の中心存在だというのです。水平の愛と垂直の愛が合わさって一つになった、真の愛の中心存在です。それが正に私なのです。

7　自分を見れば、心は縦的な面を代表し、体は横的な面を代表します。「心が正しい」という言葉を使います。正しいというのは何かというと、垂直にも合 い、水平にも合うということです。言い換えれば、立てておけば垂直線にも合い、寝かせれば水平線にも合うということです。心が縦的ならば体は横的です。し たがって、心が願うとおりに体が良く授け受けすれば、心の苦痛がなくなります。そのようなとき、よく育つのです。肉体的苦痛も苦痛ですが、心の苦痛がより 恐ろしいのです。それは、縦的なものが中心だからです。

8　私たちの体と心は、置かれている位置が違います。心は縦的であり、体は横的です。これが一つにならなければ、水平にならなければ、本質的な神様の絶対 的愛の方向に一致できる垂直線を引くことはできません。この垂直線は、二つではなく一つです。それゆえ、一番努力しなければならないこと、特に信仰生活を する私たちが努力しなければならないことは、心を中心として、どのように体を一つにするかということです。

9　人は体と心の二重になっていますが、心は縦的な面を身代わりしており、体は横的な面を身代わりしています。「あの人は心が正しい」と言うとき、それは 水平を中心として見たということです。垂直に見て語る言葉ではありません。「その人は正しい」と言うとき、その「正しい」というのは、水平に対して語る言 葉です。

仏教では、参禅を通して、心とは何かを研究してきましたが、いまだに心が何か分からずにいます。心は縦的な「私」です。また体は横的な「私」です。ですか ら、横的な私と縦的な私が統一される場で、私という人格が完成するのです。何を中心としてこの縦的なものと横的なものが統一されるのでしょうか。共鳴でき る本質を通して一つになる所において、完成を論じることができます。それはお金でもなく、知識でもなく、権力でもありません。ただ、神様の真の愛によって のみ共鳴するのです。

10　体は水平を象徴し、心は垂直を象徴します。垂直と水平が九〇度を備えなければなりません。この九〇度が四つ合わさって三六〇度にならなければならな いのです。そのようにならなければ、完全な人になれません。ですから、垂直を中心として一つにならなければなりません。体と心が一つになるとき、体を中心 として一つになることはできません。心が移動することはできないのです。水平の体が調整して、垂直の心と完全に一つになり、九〇度で一つになれる「私」を 求めなければなりません。その私というものは、人間が成熟して初めて愛を知るときに見つかるのです。東で暮らす人が塀を越えて西を眺め、西に住む人が塀を 越えて東を眺めるためには、成熟しなければならないのです。

11　心は、天地の道理に従って縦的な人格の観をもっています。そのため、心は高いのです。心が広いと言いますが、広いという概念の中には、高いという概 念が入っているのです。皆さんの心は広く、高いというのです。まっすぐなことにおいてはどこまでも、天の果てから地の果てまで、垂直にならなければなりま せん。運動する世界、円形の大宇宙圏内も、垂直は一つです。一つでなければなりません。すべての万物が願い、すべての存在が理想として願う垂直があれば、 それは一つでなければならないのです。それが真の愛です。真の愛という垂直は、この宇宙に二つあってはいけません。東洋人や西洋人、過去、現在、未来を問 わず、真の愛の垂直はただ一つです。その垂直の前に神様もぶら下がっており、その一つの垂直の前に愛の作用が広がるため、神様が願う理想もその垂直圏内に 連結されるのです。そのような軸が、そのような垂直が、この地上に生まれなかったというのです。

12　私たちはよく、心がまっすぐだと言います。一直線に垂直に立ったものを、まっすぐと言います。木も横に傾いたものは、まっすぐとは言いません。心が まっすぐだというのは、垂直に立っているという意味です。ですから、人は立って歩くのです。垂直になってこそまっすぐなのです。自分の心を完全に垂直にし なければなりません。そこにおいて、体が水平線になるのです。このように垂直と水平が私たちの内部で形成されるとき、垂直において引く力と水平において押 す力がバランスを取るようになり、求心力と遠心力が形成されるのです。

13　私たちには体と心があります。その体と心が一つになったときは苦痛を感じません。体と心が一つになっていないとき、苦痛を感じるのです。心が高くて も一大事であり、体が高くても一大事です。しかし、体と心が一つになっているときは、苦痛を感じないのです。体と心が一つになっているときは苦痛を感じま せんが、体と心が垂直になったときは、作動するのです。躍動するというのです。そのため、すべてが垂直に合わせなければなりません。水平と垂直がいつでも 調和しなければならないのです。

14　天国は男性と女性の愛から始まります。神様の愛を中心に、垂直線を中心として水平線が統一されている所が本然の天国です。神様がいらっしゃるのです が、その中で男性と女性が核になり、体と心が共にびたりと丸くなるのです。そこにおいて、心は垂直的な「私」です。体は水平的な「私」です。明確なので す。垂直的な心は神様であり、水平的な体は真の父母です。それが一つになるのです。

15　心は見えませんが垂直です。体は見えますが水平です。人間は大宇宙の縮小体です。人の中に霊界があります。霊が入っています。それが心です。見えな い心、見える体は世界の代表です。二つが中心を中心として、完全に四方を歩き回っても、ひと所を離れなければ理想的な人になるのです。見えない心と見える 体が真の愛の核を中心に一つになるとき、これが理想的な男性と女性、個人の完成になるのです。

Cheon Seong Gyeong Ⅱ - 158.The Mind and Body of a True Person 

1 The world of creation has two axes: a visible axis and an invisible axis. They form a dual structure. The visible axis and the invisible axis rotate around the subject partner at their center, which also rotates along with the two axes. The give-and-receive action between mind and body works in this manner. All beings exist according to this principle. These two axes exist even in the fallen world, but to restore that world we have to repair them. In human beings, the center of the body is the mind. Since the body is connected to the mind with the mind as its center, the body should rotate around the mind. The body should move according to the commands of the mind. When the mind directs the body to go east the body should go east, and when the mind tells the body to go west the body should go west. (136-014, 1985.12.20)

Mind and body in relationship 

2 What is the mind? It is that part of us that received love from the vertical Father, the Creator. The body is that part of us that received love from our horizontal parents. Therefore, the mind is the vertical “I” and the body is the horizontal “I.” Their relationship is one of subject partner and object partner. When the circumstances are such that our mind and body are united, horizontal and vertical unity finally takes place within us. With love, the vertical plus and the horizontal minus make a ninety- degree angle as they meet at the ideal and central point of unity. Nothing exists at that central point, but all power flows through it. Power jumps and dives into it; there is no resistance whatsoever. Everything there whirls about like a typhoon that nothing can stop. It is God who made the center in this way; He is truly the King of wisdom. The center exists in a vacuum state. When a vacuum is created, the pulling power becomes hundreds of times stronger, so everything is naturally pulled in. Its pulling power is so strong that it can swallow whatever it encounters, even a big mountain. (229-324, 1992.04.13)

3 The mind is the vertical master because it has inherited God’s lineage. The body is the horizontal master; it is the self that received the lineage of the perfected Adam. Thus, there are two masters in each of us. One is the master that inherited God’s vertical lineage, but it does not suffice to have only God’s lineage. We need a horizontal line that intersects with the vertical line of God’s lineage. That intersection is the center where the directions of east, west, north and south can meet. Each of those horizontal lines connects to the vertical line at a ninety-degree angle. When each line extends an equal distance from that perpendicular vertical line to the east, west, north and south, together they form a sphere. (302-156, 1999.06.13)

4 Looking at the mind and the body, the mind is the subject partner, in the plus position, and the body is the object partner, in the minus position. Even so, they fight each other. How did they come to fight? It is because the body became another plus. The body should be eternally the object partner before the mind, but it took over the position of subject partner. That was the Fall. (61-330, 1972.09.03)

5 God’s love is vertical, but there must also be horizontal love. Who can possess this horizontal love? The ones in the position to possess it are the true ancestors who have nothing to do with the Fall, who reach perfection and who align themselves with true love. If the human ancestors had become one with God’s love in this way, then each of us would have been born through that love. In addition, our minds and bodies would have resembled God’s mind and body, even as they resembled the mind and body of our father and mother, Adam and Eve. This is how it would have been for us. 6 The mind is the vertical “I” and the body is the horizontal “I.” The vertical Parent and my horizontal parents created me together. Had there been no Fall, I would have inherited true love, true life and true lineage from them. That is how I was supposed to come into being. I was meant to be brought into this world when they united in true love. Therefore, I was meant to be a center of the universe and a representative of Heavenly Parent’s love, a central manifestation of the formula for horizontal love, and a central being of true love formed through the union of horizontal and vertical love. That is who I was meant to be. (217-153, 1991.05.19)

7 Looking at ourselves, our mind represents the vertical aspect and our body the horizontal aspect. We use the expression‎‎, “a mind that is upright and straight.” Upright means the mind is correct vertically and horizontally. When it stands vertically it is correct, and when it extends itself horizontally it is correct. When it stands vertically it is correct, and when it extends itself horizontally it is correct. To the mind, which we consider to be vertical, the body is horizontal. Hence, if the mind and body reciprocate well according to the desires of the mind, the mind is at peace. In that case, we grow well. Physical suffering is painful, but the suffering of the mind is worse. That is because the vertical is central. (178-274, 1988.06.08)

8 The mind and body are in different positions. The mind is vertical and the body is horizontal. Yet unless they are united, unless they are made level, we cannot form a perpendicular that is aligned with the direction of God’s essential, absolute love. There can be only one perpendicular, not two. So we have to do our best to unite our minds and bodies with our minds as the center, especially in our life of faith. (178-045, 1988.06.01)

9 Each person has a mind and a body. The mind represents a person’s vertical aspect and the body his or her horizontal aspect. When you remark, “That person is upright,” you say it with the horizontal in mind. To arrive at such an opinion, you did not look at that person solely from a vertical perspective. Inevitably you considered his or her horizontal standard. Believers in Buddhism, for example, try to comprehend the nature of the mind through meditation, but they have not yet discovered what the mind truly is. In fact, it is simple. The mind is the vertical “I” and the body is the horizontal “I”. I am perfected as a human being when the vertical “I” and the horizontal “I” unite. What is the center that enables the horizontal and the vertical to unite? There must be an essence by which the two can resonate with each other and unite in a state of perfection. Neither money nor knowledge nor power can create this resonance. The only thing that can bring it forth is God’s true love. (226-075, 1992.02.02)

10 The body represents the horizontal and the mind the vertical. The vertical and the horizontal have to meet at a ninety-degree angle within you. When four ninety-degree angles are combined, they make 360 degrees. Unless this happens within you, you cannot be a perfect person. That is why you have to become one centering on the vertical, the mind. To attain unity of mind and body, the body should not be the center. The mind should not vacillate or change under the body’s influence. You need to control your body, the horizontal, in order to unite completely with your mind, the vertical. When you have done that, you must find the “I” who abides in complete mind-body unity, where they form a ninety-degree angle. You will find that real “I” only when you grow to perfection and experience conjugal love for the first time. In order for a person living in the east to look west and for a person living in the west to look east, they have to attain maturity. (168-196, 1987.09.20)

11 The mind that takes after the principle of heaven and earth represents the vertical aspect of a human being. That is why we consider that the mind should be high and lofty. Although a mind can be considered broad, within the concept of being broad-minded is also the concept of height. So your mind should be both broad and high. An upright mind should consist of a perpendicular connection reaching to the highest point in heaven and all the way to the ends of the earth. In the world of things in motion, the spherical realm of the great universe, at every point on a plane there can be only one perpendicular. If there is a perpendicular that is desired by all beings in the creation as their ideal, it has to be one. That is true love. That perpendicular, namely, true love, cannot be two. This is so anywhere in the universe. Whether someone is from the East or the West, whether living in the past, the present or the future, there is only one perpendicular of true love. Since God is also connected to that perpendicular, and the action of love takes place at that one point, the ideal that God desires is connected with the realm that arises from the perpendicular. However, this axis, this point of perpendicularity, has not yet been formed on this earth. (177-327, 1988.05.22)

12 We often use the expression‎‎ “He has an upright mind.” Upright means standing straight in a line perpendicular to the ground. We do not use such an expression‎‎ for a tree that is leaning over. Thus, for a person to have an upright mind means that his or her mind stands straight. That is why human beings walk with an upright posture. A person can be spiritually upright only when his or her mind is vertical. Hence, we have to make the mind completely vertical. Then our body becomes a horizontal line. When we establish the vertical and horizontal within ourselves, the force of the vertical that pulls inward and the force of the horizontal that expands outward are in balance and manifest as centripetal and centrifugal forces. 13 We each have both a mind and a body. When the mind and body are united, we do not feel distress. But when the mind and body are disunited, when they are not balanced horizontally, we feel inner torment. The problem arises when either the mind or the body is too overpowering, creating an imbalance. When the mind and body are balanced in horizontal alignment, however, we do not feel anxiety. Also, when the mind and body are aligned with the perpendicular, things begin to move. A lively motion ensues, and we feel joy. That is why everything should be aligned with the perpendicular. The horizontal and the vertical must always be in harmony, joining on the perpendicular. (212-293, 1991.01.08)

14 The kingdom of heaven begins from the love of a man and a woman. The original kingdom of heaven is where the horizontal line unites with the vertical line at the center, based on God’s love. With God present, a loving man and a loving woman become a core within the love of God, and their minds and bodies together form a perfect sphere. There, the mind is the vertical self and the body is the horizontal self. Also, the vertical mind is God, and the horizontal body is True Parents. The two are united as one. (217-150, 1991.05.19)

15 The mind is invisible and vertical. The body is visible and horizontal. The family is the microcosm of the great universe. The spirit world exists within human beings. A spirit dwells within us; that is the mind. The invisible mind and the visible body represent the world. Even though they may travel all over the place, as long as they do not leave their orbit around the center of true love, they can form an ideal person. Further, when the invisible mind and the visible body become one with true love at their core, that person will become an ideal man or an ideal woman, a perfect individual. (217-150, 1991.05.19)
