부모라는 것은 말이에요, 자식밖에 모릅니다. 내가 흥남감옥에 있을 때…. 흥남에서 정주에 가려면 차로 열네 시간이 걸립니다. 거기 가려고 통행증을 타기 위해 매달 공산당 패들 앞에….

더구나 선생님은 공산당을 때려잡는 챔피언으로 소문이 났었기 때문에 나를 미워하는 자들이 못살게 굴고, 물건을 가져오는 것을 방해하고 그랬을 거예요. 그런 환경에서도 선생님의 어머니는 천신만고해서 면회를 한 달에 한 번씩 오는 것입니다. 

오는데 자식이 배고프고 어려울 것이라고 해서 정성을 다해 미싯가루 같은 걸 만들어 옵니다. 이북에 먹을 것이나 어디 많아요? 그것을 내가 잘 알아요.

그런 어려운 환경에서 별의별 놀음을 다 해서 미싯가루를 해 가지고 아들이라고 찾아와 떡 내놓습니다. 면회할 때 한 30명이, 한 형무소 죄수들이 나와서 하는데, 부모들이 찾아오는 사람도 있지만 몇 년이 지나도 찾아오지 않는 사람도 있습니다.

父母というのは、子どものことしか考えません。私が興南の監獄にいるとき…。興南から定州に行くには汽車で十四時間かかります。そこに行こうと思い、通行証をもらうために毎月共産党の輩たちの前に…。

しかも先生が共産党をぶっつぶすチャンピオンとしてうわさが広まっていたので、私を憎む者たちが意地悪く振る舞い、物を持ってくるのを妨害していたはずです。そんな環境でも先生の母親は千辛万苦して、面会のために、ひと月一回ずつ来るのです。


来るのですが、子どもがおなかをすかせて困っているだろうと、精誠を尽くしてはったい粉のようなものを作ってきます。北韓のどこに食べる物があるでしょうか。 それを私はよく知っています。

そのような困難な環境であらゆる手を尽くしてはったい粉を作り、息子だからと言って訪ねてきてはぱっと出して見せるのです。面会するとき約三十人が、一つの刑務所の囚人たちが出てきてするのですが、親が訪ねてくる人もいれば、何年たっても訪ねてこない人もいます。

To parents, children are everything. When I was in the Hung-nam prison, it took twelve hours to get from Hung-nam to Jong-ju by train. In order to get a pass to go there, my mother had to wait before the communists every day.

And I was known the champion of beating the communists, so many of the leftists hated me and I guess many of them bothered her about bringing things to me. But even in these circumstances, my mother went through all sorts of hardship to visit me once a month. 

When she came, she prepared all sorts of things like the powder of roasted grain, thinking that I am hungry and suffering. Well, do you think there was plenty of food in North Korea?

I know there was not, but in this difficult circumstance, my mother would prepare food and bring it to me. When the prisoners met the visitors, about 30 people met them, and there were prisoners who were often visited by their parents, whereas there were some who were never visited.
