SINGAPORE — The police have arrested two South Korean men with the Korean Broadcasting System News for alleged criminal trespass into the home of the North Korean Ambassador, days ahead of a historic summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
The duo, aged 42 and 45, are part of a group of four men being investigated in connection with the case. The police identified the other two as a 31-year-old South Korean man from the same news outlet, and their 29-year-old guide and interpreter.
It is unclear how the group tried to get into the envoy's home. The police said on Friday (June 8) that they were alerted to the incident at about 3.50pm on Thursday, but did not elaborate.
The three men from the Korean Broadcasting System News are not accredited media personnel in Singapore, the police added.
Anyone convicted of criminal trespass under Section 447 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224, may be punished with imprisonment of up to three months, or a fine of up to S$1,500, or both.
The incident, coming days ahead of the highly anticipated Trump-Kim summit, drew a stern warning from the police.
"The Police would like to remind all foreigners visiting Singapore to abide by our laws. Those who break the law will be dealt with firmly, and this may include termination of visas and repatriation," said the police.
"Members of the media who commit any offence in Singapore will also not be accredited and thus will not be able to cover the summit."
The arrests came amid heightened security in Singapore.
On Friday, a Kim Jong-un impersonator was detained by the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) for two hours.
The Hong Kong-based entertainer, who went by his stage name Howard X
The impersonator added that ICA officers told him to steer clear of the summit venues. Mr Trump is scheduled to meet Mr Kim at the Capella Hotel in Sentosa
He arrived in Singapore at 3.30am, and was interviewed at 4.15am, the ICA said. 45 minutes later, he cleared the interview, and was allowed entry.
Howard X is here with a Donald Trump impersonator for “The ‘Real’ Trump Kim Summit” event at Bugis Junction on Saturday.
Event organiser Vybes said in a statement that Howard X has assured them he is fine and "will continue with our plans as scheduled".
"Vybes has been in close contact with the Singapore authorities who have taken the matter of (our) event seriously," the company said.
Responding to the TODAY's queries, an ICA spokesperson said that travellers to Singapore may be subject to additional interviews and/or screening, "as part of the immigration clearance process" at all Singapore checkpoints.
Earlier on Thursday, TODAY reported that there were signs of activity at the three likely venues
The Singapore government had gazetted sections of Tanglin, Orchard Road, Sentosa and its surrounding waters as "special event areas" from June 10 to 14.
Mr Trump is expected to arrive in Singapore late on Sunday night, after attending the Group of Seven (G7) summit in Charlevoix, Canada, according to White House press secretary Sarah Sanders.
The flight time from Canada to Singapore is about 17 hours. Mr Trump's Air Force One is expected to land at the Paya Lebar Airbase.
Given the significance of the high-profile meeting, the global press corps has also been descending on Singapore, with the F1 Pit Building in downtown Singapore transformed to host the media.
