The 2014 Audi A8 L TDI is the newest luxury sedan powered by a six-cylinder instead of an eight, more proof that the engine downsizing trend is hitting all segments. At first, it's odd to find something smaller than a V-8 or a mighty W-12 under the A8's hood, but this is the second V-6 Audi has recently stuffed under the A8's hood, after the 3.0T model's gas-powered, supercharged 3.0-liter.
In TDI trim, the A8 gets a 3.0-liter V-6 turbodiesel that sends 240 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. The engine's most noteworthy benefit, of course, is its best-in-class fuel economy. EPA-rated at 24/36 mpg city/highway (beating the 3.0T by 6 city and 8 hwy mpg), the engine works in tandem with the A8's 23.8-gallon fuel tank to produce a bladder-punishing range of more than 800 miles.
The oil-burning engine is no slouch, either. Running from 0-60 mph took 5.8 seconds (half a second slower than the 3.0T) and the quarter mile required 14.5 seconds with a trap speed of 92.6 mph (13.8 seconds at 101.3 mph for the 3.0T). What these times don't convey, however, is the experience from behind the wheel. Step on the go pedal from a stop and the tach needle doesn't move much before you feel the engine churn out all the torque it's got. Acceleration is smooth, quiet, and effortless, with the engine humming at an easy-breezy 1700 rpm once you've reached highway speeds of 70-80 mph.
Complementing the powertrain is a solid chassis highlighted by an adaptive air suspension that ensures the A8 glides on the road. If there's a pothole out there that fazes this large Audi, I haven't found it. The A8 also feels relatively light on its feet, responding well to steering inputs and staying planted through corners. Much credit goes to its aluminum body construction, which enables the A8's comparatively light curb weight of 4529 pounds.
The interior is heavy with luxury and tech. Our 2014 A8 L tester featured a gorgeous two-toned Nougat brown and black color scheme. Accents included a mix of polished burl walnut, piano black inlays, and metallic trim. Standard items for the $83,395 base price include four-zone climate control, navigation, and power rear sunshades. (The TDI is only offered with the long-wheelbase variant.) That's $3700 more than the base A8 3.0T L, but $5100 cheaper than the 4.0T L. Our tester totaled $99,445, with the biggest chunk of that going to the $6300 Bang & Olufsen sound system. Next up is a $4000 Premium package that adds blind-spot monitoring, LED headlights, and 22-way adjustable and massaging front seats that alone are worth the premium. A Driver Assistance package ($3250) includes high-beam assist, lane keeping assist, and an adaptive cruise control that also has the ability to bring the A8 to a full stop and accelerate (perfect for traffic). The cruise control stalk is a bit hidden on the lower left side of the steering wheel column, which is fine during the day, but harder to operate at night because it's not illuminated, though an owner should be able to memorize the functions after repeated use. The package also comes with a topview camera system, a helpful tool for nervous parkers as it provides a clear 360-degree view of obstacles surrounding the large sedan. Completing the options list is a panorama roof ($1300) and 20-inch rims ($1200).
From a value standpoint, the A8 L TDI starts to look more attractive when compared to its closest competitor, the Mercedes-Benz S350 BlueTec. The outgoing 2013 model costs almost $10,000 more, yet is 1.2 seconds slower to 60 mph despite having a bit more torque. To be fair, the all-new 2014 S-Class is around the corner and we're eager to see what changes, if any, Benz will make to its diesel powerplant. For now, the A8 is the king of luxury diesels.

Reading all the comments here complaining about the vehicle value/performance makes me laugh. People who buy this car don't drive but ride in the back seat, hence the reason why it's a long wheelbase version, and don't give 2 shlt about the price of diesel.?

I really like the A8.? And with the twin turbo V8 it's a freight train for control freaks.? But for those getting excited over the performance of the V6 diesel, slow down and consider all the numbers.? Those acceleration times?? All the quickness is in the 0-30 mph, abetted by a tightly geared 8AT, brake torquing the turbos and an AWD launch.? That doesn't mean 5.8 seconds to 60 isn't respectable, but how often are you brake torquing your $85k V6 diesel luxury sedan for a slingshot launch off the light?? After 30 mph, the A8 TDI is distinctly slow as the 92 mph trap speed would indicate.? Just how slow is that?? From 30-75 mph, an ubiquitous mainstream V6 sedan like the Honda Accord is much quicker.? 6.1 seconds vs. 7.9 seconds (Edmunds).? In fact, the Honda Accord 4cyl only takes 7.7 seconds to do the same interval.
Now people may be alright with this sort of paucity of acceleration.? The A8?TDI?is a big car, it gets good fuel economy. But if I'm spending that sort of money on a luxury sedan (I drive a CTS-V among other things), I'd like to know that I can out-accelerate a 4cyl mainstream family sedan from a rolling start on the on-ramp.? Just my preference of course.

$100K and a 1/4 mile time of 14.5 @ 92.6mph??3.5-4.0 V6 TDI?with Twin turbos and 350hp / 520 lbft.? We don't have Euro tax on engine sizes and Audi should be able to keep the engine?weight nearly the same. Impressive car but aren't almost all $100K cars impressive?

So when does the V8 version come out?

Is this the first full size saloon that can do sub 6 sec 0-60 and not get hit with the gas guzzler tax? What else out there puts up those numbers, 400lb-ft and 36mpg??

Porsche Panamera matches the mpg and 405 lb-ft but much slower 0-60.? The A8 is?impressive but not so much when the car costs $100K.? I would thoroughly enjoy driving this car with great 0-60 times which is most important but a 14.5 sec 1/4 mile run is a let down.? Too much car (4500 lbs) for 240 hp.?Audi needs to finish the job.

Public perception of US consumers is still anti-diesel unfortunately. There is no way an executive saloon buyer will option for this..
LikeReplyshaconaqe12 hours ago
@rinosaur?It doesn't help that, unlike Europe, diesel is more expensive than gas and in many areas it is much more expensive. ?Where I live it averages about $0.70/gal more than regular. ?This fact changes the "money saved" calculation a lot.

I paid $3.56 for diesel three days ago in Murfreesboro, TN.? Diesel vehicals have much better resale value and operation costs are lower.? I get 45 mpg with my 2012 Jetta and I drive agressively.? The problem is that VW customer service and reliability sucks.? No info on how to change the oil filter cartriage and no fuse box diagrams in the car, manual or service dealer computer.? Problems with AC, windows, locks, head lights etc.? They were apologetic but worthless non the less.? My last German car.
A Euro diesel engine in a domestic vehical (Chrysler/GM) will be a great combo once they actually get them to the dealers.

Diesels are great for luxury, remember that saving time is probably very important to the buyers of $100k cars, with 800 mile range, one would not have to fuel often and at any given time you would have enough fuel to go basically wherever you wanted to go. With this range you are in control of where and when you stop, that's luxury.

Demand for diesel cars, from actual buyers, is low. ?Demand for Audis is lower than that.
Glad they brought it. ?But it's starting off with an 0-2 count, and a $85k price tag......

@BlackDynamiteOnline?Still bitter about the new IS ranking behind the old S4.?
Demand for Diesel is rising, especially in bigger cities (where most luxury sales are). ?I see almost as many diesel X5's as petrol X5s, and way more Q7 diesels than gas equivalents.?
Demand for Audis has never been higher, especially the A8. No doubt that will change when the new S-class comes out, but for now, the A8/S8 is THE classy luxury sedan to own.?

Have to agree with euroguy. The new Audis are clearly much better than any lexus. The S4 will crush the IS in performance, and even a dumbass like u knows that.

So the only thing justifying your comment is the fact that your profile is named "Black Dynamite"?? Audi is possibly the luxury brand that has the most potential to dominate. If Lexus changed that god awful grill design maybe that would change. It just looks hideous on the new IS.

American's don't hate Audi's, demand is continously outstripping supply for Audis. ?When you take out the Lexus ES350 (which as a Camry/Avalon platformed car is not in the same league is the IS, A4, GS, A6, etc.), their sales numbers aren't even terrible impressive. Even worse when you think about how Lexus does worldwide. ?The S4 is not overpriced, but it's not discounted, and no lease specials as it's considered a specialty car (much like the IS-F).?

Demand for diesel is still a niche market, that's a fair statement. ?Demand for Audis is high and gaining, though. The $82.5k is actually a bargain for the A8L 3.0TDI especially when you consider the $93k plus MB charges for the S350 BlueTec and the S400 Hybrid, both of which get far less mileage. Then there's the $120k LS600hL that gets 2/3rds the MPGs of the A8L 3.0TDI while still managing somehow to be much slower... There's a reason why Lexus didn't even bother to do anything further than a moderate refresh on the LS.

@BlackDynamiteOnline?you are on crack if you think Americans don't want Audis.? New Audi dealership is set to open around a month from now near my house, rumor is its because the other dealer about 30 min from me couldn't keep up with demand.? Most people would take a free Audi over any lexus

@shaconaqe?No doubt there are some folks that just want to feel better about using less fuel, but in my case and I think many others these vehicles are leased, and if you can choose between one that averages in the high teens vs one that averages in the 30s it is an easy choice, esp when the diesel performs so well.? In fact if I were choosing my Cayenne again, even if the price and fuel economy were identical, I would choose it over the V-6.? You'll find that a car with a 230/410 diesel is awesome to drive compared to any 300/300 gas powered car, ESPECIALLY when they are a big heavy vehicle like this sedan or a modern SUV.

This Audi is a beautiful car, but I still struggle with understanding $100k cars built with fuel savings in mind. ?If one is really that concerned with fuel costs then why pay $100k for the car? ?In the same way, would a true greenie really buy a big luxury barge?
Color me impressed by the car but puzzled by its existence. ?Perhaps the poseur market will float it?
1LikeReplyeuroguy12 hours ago
@shaconaqe?Same could be argued for the X5d, or cayenne D, or any hybrid car for that matter... the cost savings are just another means of justifying a totally irrational financial decision (buying a new car...)
Beyond price, diesel's also offer a different driving experience. It is a much smoother engine, which lends itself well to luxury cruisers and SUVs.?

You're right about the combo.? They should finish the job put a real high output diesel in this thing.

You have to experience these engines to realize how meaningless the hp figure really is.? I have been a hp nut most of my life but when I drove a Cayenne diesel (and subsequently leased it) I realized that it is torque that does 95% of the work in day to day driving.? The Cayenne glides up to 90+ mph without even breathing hard, jumps off the line, and generally feels like a strong V-8.? The primary difference is the easy 30+ mpg I get on the freeway.? I love the engine and?if I were looking for a luxury sedan I would put the German diesels at the top of the list.? Especially with the current and inevitable trend in fuel prices.? In my area diesel is now the same or sometimes less in cost than regular.? Really, try one of these cars and you'll be amazed. @NaturallyAspirated?

I must say that 24/36 is pretty impressive for a 4500 lb car that goes 0-60 in 5.8 seconds.?

This car will be great for countries like China where people value backseat space and need torquey engine for slow speed driving, which is what they do most of the time. Not sure about in the US though since 240-hp is kind of "weak" for a car this size for the type of driving we do around here.
LikeReplyDimardi15 hours ago
So they are meant for the Chinese market where they do more 'slow speed' driving and are not well suited for the US,? yet they are perfectly adequate for Germany, where they 'merely' cruise the Autobahn at 155 mph all day long.?
