The Ukishima-maru: The History of The Day Remembered by Maizuru
On August 24, 1945, the Ukishima-maru sank off the coast of Maizuru, Japan, while carrying Koreans yearning to return to their liberated homeland.
Even after 80 years, the exact truth behind the tragedy remains unrevealed, and the remains of countless victims have yet to return home.
KB Financial Group, alongside Professor Seo Kyoung-duk, visited the site of the tragedy in Maizuru to trace the history of the Ukishima-maru incident.
Visiting the sinking site, the victims' memorial park, and the graves for unclaimed remains, we reexamine the harrowing reality of that day.
We also share the stories of Maizuru citizens who have maintained the memorial and continued to hold annual memorial services.
Furthermore, we explore why the sunken hull was abandoned underwater for nine years and address the unresolved issue of repatriating the victims' remains.
History begins with remembrance. Until the souls of that tragic day finally find peace, the history of the Ukishima-maru remains unfinished.
