<A name="[문서의 처음]"></A> <기본적인 영어면접 에티켓> 1. 영어면접시 질문을 알아듣지 못했을때 영어로 면접을 받다보면 질문을 제대로 알아듣지 못해서 당황할 때가 있다. 이런 경우는 흔하게 일어 나지만 잘 대처를 하지 못하는 경우 불합격으로 이어질 수 있으므로 특히 신경 써야 한다. 이럴 때 다시 한 번 말해 달라고 부탁을 할 때는, Beg your pardon, sir(ma'am)?↗라고 하면 된다. 면접이 상당히 진전되어 있을 때에 한 두마디의 말을 듣지 못했다면, Pardon, sir(ma'am)?↗이라고만 해도 좋다. 물론 어느 경우나 말 끝을 올려야 한다. 또 잘못 들었으면 그 즉시 다시 물어야 된다. 생각하는 척 하다가 ‘What?’ 이라든가, ‘What did you say?’ 하고 천연덕스럽게 묻는 것은 면접관에게 불쾌한 인상을 주게 된다. 단어나 발음을 알아듣지 못했거나 문장이 어려워서 질문의 내용을 정확히 이해하지 못했을 때는, I'm sorry I couldn't follow you. I'm afraid didn't understand your question. Would you mind repeating it, sir(ma'am)? 이라고 하면 되고, 또 다음과 같이 말해도 같은 뜻이 된다. I didn't quite catch what you said. Would you please say that again, sir(ma'am)? 이러한 표현들은 발음연습을 잘 해 두었다가, 어떤 경우에라도 곧 입 밖으로 나올 수 있도록 해야겠다. 2. 슬랭 표현과 같은 심한 구어체나 버릇없는 말씨는 피한다 Yeah. - Oh, yeah. - → Yes, sir(ma'am). Yep. - Nope. → No, sir(ma'am). 3. 부정적인 답변에는 I'm afraid 나 I'm sorry를 반드시 사용한다 Can you go to the movies with me tonight? →I'm sorry, but I can't. I'm afraid not. I'm sorry, (but)~. I'm afraid to say(that)~. I'm afraid to tell you~. I'm afraid to inform~. Do you have any idea? → I'm afraid not. I'm afraid I don't. I'm afraid I have no idea. 긍정적인 답변에도 I think [believe, suppose, etc.]등이나 My opinion is 등으로 진술을 시작하는 것이 좋다. 4. 정확하고 똑똑한 발음을 구사할 것 wanna → want to gonna → going to gotta → got to Whaddya → What do you ~ ●다음과 같은 표현의 사용은 권장할 만하다. If I'm not mistaken,~. If my memory serves me right,~. If my memory doesn't fail me,~. If I remember,~. ※ 참고 : In case you haven't noticed,~. (상대편이 알고 있는지 모르는 사항을 설명할 경우) 5. 반드시 적절한 응대를 하자, 면접관이 보여주는 호의 및 치사(compliment)에 대하여, 비록 사소하다는 생각이 들지라도 ‘꿀먹은 벙어리’식은 곤란하다. “Thank you, sir[ma'am]."를 잊지 말자. 6. 양해를 구할 때 사용하는 표현 If you don't care,~. If you don't mind,~. If you have no objection,~. If it's all the same to [with] you,~. If it's all right with you,~. 7. 답변이 곤란한 경우 1) 한 마디로 말씀드리기가 어렵군요. It's hard to say in a nutshell. It's difficult to explain briefly. It's difficult to define in a word. 2) 능력은 부족하지만 최선을 다해 답하겠습니다. Your question is beyond my ability, but I'll try my best answering it. 8. Would you mind~?와 부정 의문문에 답하는 경우 1) Would you mind asking a few questions of you? → Yes, I do.(아니에요. 질문하지 마세요.) → No, I don't(mind). (네, 좋습니다.) No, not at all. Go ahead. Fine. 2) 어떤 glamor 가 “If this seat is vacant, would you mind my sitting here?” 라고 할 경우.   "Yes, I do." 로 답하면 그녀는 떠나가고, 싫은 남자가 “Would you mind kissing you, honey?" 라고 간청할 때, → “No, a thousand times no."라 하면 그는 ”얼씨구나“하고 즐거워한다. 3) Don't you love me? → Yes, I do.(아니 사랑해요)    No, I don't.(그래요, 사랑하지 않아요) 4) Haven't you ever visited England? 라는 질문에 “예, 아직 안 가봤어요.” 라는 뜻으로 → “Yes, I haven't." 라고 하면, 우리말로는 그럴 듯해도 영어로는 잘못이다. 맞게 하려면 “No, I haven't."라고 해야 한다. “아뇨, 가 봤어요.”라고 하려면, “Yes, I have (once or twice.)" 결국 중요한 것은 Yes 다음은 언제나 긍정, No 다음은 언제나 부정이다. 그러므로 “Yes, I don't." 또는 "No, I do."는 맞지 않는다. <개인 신상에 관한 질문> 1. About yourself 신상 1. Would you tell me your name? 성명을 말씀해 주시겠습니까? Q - May I have your name? A - My name is Cho A-Ra which means 'Everything goes well with me. So I'm happy' 제 이름은 조아라이고, 뜻은 ‘만사가 잘 되어 기쁘다’ 라는 뜻입니다. 2. Do the chinese characters in your name mean anything? 한자로는 무슨 뜻이 있습니까? Q - Is there any special meaning in it? Would you tell me what your name means? A - My name is Oh Ja-Ryon. Oh is my last[family]name, and Ja-Ryon is my first[given] name meaning 'Self- blooming Lotus'.
