As in many societies, sewing was a basic skill required of all women in traditional Korea. A woman's stitch spoke of her devotion to husband and family and her hopes for the future. Inside a woman's sewing box--often made of brightly colored paper--were her most prized possessions: thread, a ruler or measuring tape, scissors, needles and thimbles. A woman's devotion to her wifely tasks was demonstrated by the attention she paid to her sewing tools. Cloth or leather thimbles and needle cases were often covered with bright embroidery. The sewing accessories shown here illustrate the importance placed on sewing in the traditional woman's life and in her wit and skill.
