Summary:
Paul anticipates an objection: if Jews seek to be justified in Christ and are thereby found to be “sinners” like Gentiles, does that make Christ a servant of sin? He rejects the idea emphatically. He argues that the real wrongdoing would be to rebuild the system he once tore down - returning to reliance on the Law - which would only prove him a transgressor.
Paul then explains that through the Law he died to the Law so that he might live to God. He describes his new reality in union with Christ: he has been crucified with Christ, and his former self no longer lives; instead, Christ lives in him. The life he now lives in the body is lived by faith in the Son of God, who loved him and gave Himself up for him.
He concludes by insisting he will not nullify the grace of God - because if righteousness could come through the Law, then Christ’s death would have been unnecessary.
Teaching:
The mystery of faith is this: whether someone believes in Jesus who died 100 years ago or Jesus who died 2,000 years ago, if a person believes in Jesus, that person becomes one who has been crucified with Christ - and this is possible by the power of God.
To live by faith means to firmly embrace our status as God’s children, to know that the Son of God died for me, and to live in Jesus Christ - giving glory to God the Father.
We must come to know how to live out the gospel of Christ, how to live out the gospel of truth, and we must keep experiencing it through our behavior.
