Summary:
Paul paints a picture of an heir who, while still a child, is no different in daily experience from a slave even though everything ultimately belongs to him. Until the time set by his father arrives, the child remains under guardians and managers who control his life. Paul says this mirrors the believers’ former condition: when they were “children,” they were held in bondage under the elemental principles of the world.
Then he describes a decisive change in history: when the fullness of time came, God sent His Son - born of a woman and born under the Law - so that He might redeem those under the Law and so that they might receive adoption as sons. Because they are now sons, God sends the Spirit of His Son into their hearts, and that Spirit cries out, “Abba! Father!” Paul concludes that this means they are no longer slaves but sons; and if they are sons, they are also heirs through God.
Teaching:
In God’s time, He had Jesus born under the Law - born of a woman - so that He would save the people under the Law. He let us obtain “the standing/rights of a son”; though we were not God’s sons, He made us God’s sons in Jesus’ name.
We were originally the devil’s children, but God sent His Son and redeemed us by His death for us. By faith in that Jesus we received the Spirit of a son, and God adopted us; not simply as adopted children, but by giving the Spirit of His Son, He made us His own real sons.
The Bible speaks of the Spirit of the Son, the Spirit in which there is the grace of the cross - His death and resurrection. Therefore, sin is handled, and we can receive the Holy Spirit.
