☞ Revelation 2:20 - Nevertheless, I have this against you: You tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess. By her teaching she misleads my servants into sexual immorality and the eating of food sacrificed to idols.(NIV); Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols.(KJV); "But I have this complaint against you. You are permitting that woman - that Jezebel who calls herself a prophet - to lead my servants astray. She teaches them to commit sexual sin and to eat food offered to idols.(NLT)
○ Jezebel in Old Testament
1) Family of Jezebel - Jezebel (c.BC 870~BC 841) was the wife as queen of King Ahab (reigned BC 874~BC 853), the 7th king of the Northern Kingdom of Israel (BC 931~BC 722), of which capital was Samaria. She was the daughter of Ethbaal (reigned BC 891~BC 859), who was king of Sidon (as the Mediterranean sea state) and priest of the god Baal. Ethbaal means ‘one who lives with the god Baal’. Thus, Jezebel was a priestess serving the goddess Astarte or Ashtoreth or Asherah.
2) Ahab, Jezebel and Elijah - Jezebel (1 Kings 16~22) urged on King Ahab to make his servants and all the Israelites worship the god Baal and the goddess Asherah or Ashtoreth (1 Kings 16:31~33, 1 Kings 21:25). She politically and strategically made the Israelites serve other gods other than LORD God. Also, Jezebel was excellent in sexual morality and witchcraft (2 Kings 9:22), and she killed all the prophets of LORD God (1 Kings 18:4, 18:13), and she even tried to kill Elijah (the ministry of prophecy, BC 875~BC 848) who pointed out her mistakes (1 Kings 19). In just such a situation, the prophet Elijah appeared before King Ahab and rebuked Israel for their apostasy, saying that there would be a great famine without rain in the land of Israel for three and a half years, but King Ahab and Jezebel's followers did not listen to Elijah’s advice.
3) Fall of Ahab and Jezebel - Jezebel used her royal authority and her intrigue and trickery, she plundered properties of landowners and people including Naboth's Vineyard (1 Kings 21). Ahab's dynasty fell because of this woman, and the dogs licked up his blood when Ahab was killed by an arrow in BC 853 (1 Kings 21:19, 22:37~38). And the entire family of Ahab was destroyed in BC 841 by Jehu (reigned BC 841~BC 814), the 10th king of the Northern Kingdom of Israel (1 Kings 21:24, 2 Kings 10:1~11), and Jehu threw Jezebel down out of a window and dogs devoured her body at the ground of Jezreel (1 Kings 21:23, 2 Kings 9:30~37). This was fulfilled according to the word of LORD God (had declared) (1 Kings 21:19~29, 22:38).
○ Preceding Model of King Solomon – The fact that King Ahab worshiped other gods because of Jezebel's impulse was the same as King Solomon (reigned BC 970~BC 931), the third king of the Kingdom of Israel (BC 1050~BC 931), worshiped other gods because of the tricks and impulses of the women of Moabites, Ammonites, Sidonians, and Hittites. Seven hundred wives of royal birth and three hundred concubines seduced Solomon into worshipping the Sidonian goddess Ashtoreth, the Ammonite god Molech, and the Moabite god Chemosh. (1 Kings 11:1-8). As a result of King Solomon's betrayal of LORD God in this way, the kingdom of Israel was divided into the Northern Kingdom of Israel (BC 931~BC 722) and the Southern Kingdom of Judah (BC 931~BC 586) in BC 931.
