Denifrice(Toothpaste)
Toothpaste, like pro-phylais paste, contains a mixture of abrasive mate-rials to clean tooth structures and restorations to resist discoloration and plaque accumulation. These commercial preparations contain 20% to 40% abra-sive agents, clolring agents, and flavoring agents. The lowest possible abrasive rankings are desirable to prevent removal of softer tooth structures and restorations(Figure9-6). The ADA Seal indicates that the abrasive particles do not exceed the maximum acceptable abrasiveness
Denture Cleansers
The use of a tooth with water and a mild cleansing agent is sufficient to remove most plaque, surface stains, and food debris from removable prosthetic appliances. The immer-sion of the prosthesis into commercially prepared denture cleansers that loosen stains and deposits that can then be rinsed or brushed away is also appropri-ate. Commercial denture cleansers should be non-toxic, nonabrasive, and harmless to the components of the prosthesis. Full acrylic prostheses can be slaked in dilute alkaline or acid commercial prepa-rations. Prostheses with metal components should not be placed in dilute acid solutions or hypochlo-rites( bleach) because of the resultant corrosion of these components.
