Summary:
Paul urges his readers to shape their daily conduct around the Spirit’s leading so that their natural, self-driven cravings do not take control. He explains that there is an ongoing conflict within a person: the pull of the flesh and the direction of the Spirit oppose one another, creating a tension that can keep someone from simply doing whatever impulse suggests. Yet, he says, when a person is guided by the Spirit, that person is not living under the condemning pressure of the law as a controlling system. He then contrasts Spirit-led life with what becomes obvious when the flesh is in charge—patterns of sexual wrongdoing, spiritual corruption and false worship, hostile and divisive relationships, jealous rivalries and outbursts, self-centered factions and envy, as well as drunkenness, reckless partying, and similar behaviors. Finally, he delivers a sober warning he has given before: those who persist in such ways of life show themselves outside the inheritance of God’s kingdom.
Teaching:
The Holy Spirit is the Shepherd who guides us. If we want to follow the Holy Spirit, we must keep our eyes on the Holy Spirit. First, we need to look to the Word. And the Spirit’s Word helps us listen, reflect, and understand. Therefore, the more we are filled with the Holy Spirit, the more we will follow the Holy Spirit—and when we follow the Holy Spirit, we will be unable to follow the path of the flesh.
We must take off and throw away all the works of the flesh and be able to live by following the kingdom of God.
