Living Next Door To Alice ....

[창조도전]

Plot :

The song is about a young man's long-standing love, Alice, who's also the girl next door and his neighbour of 24 years,

which is left unrequited after she moves away.

The protagonist had seen a limousine parked at Alice's home and begins to reflect on childhood memories

and his friendship with Alice, and becomes heartbroken as he sees Alice get inside the limousine.

As he watches the car drive out of sight, the protagonist feels regret about two things:

1. Alice leaving without explanation;
2. That, in 24 years, he never took the opportunity to express his feelings for her.

Another female character in the song is Sally, another long-time neighbour of the main protagonist

who is introduced early in the song. In the song's first verse,

she reminds the protagonist of Alice's impending departure. Sally,

who later tells the man that he now must get over Alice,

then states that she in turn has been waiting for him for 24 years.

But the man fails to acknowledge her and reaffirms that he'll "never get used to not living next door to Alice."

Guitarist Alan Silson을 주축으로 영국에서 1966년 결성되었습니다. 
Debut시 Group이 마약을 연상시킨다는 이유로 국영방송에서 방송금지 처분을 받는 등 
어려움에 처하기도 했습니다.Smokie의 국내에서의 인기는
 비틀즈와 맞먹었다.

 Rock 'N' Roll과 Soft Pop, 
그리고 Folk가 조화를 이룬 Smokie의 음악은 부드럽고, 
Romantic한 면을 강조한 달콤한 음악으로 정작 영국에서는 인기를 얻지 못하였으나 
한국에서는 폭발적인 사랑을 받았다.

틴 에이져 시절에   아름다운 Smokie감성에 푹 빠졌던 것은
지금 생각하면 참으로 아름다운 추억이다

샐리가 소식을 듣고 전화했어요
여기서 ‘get the word’는 여기서 ‘소식을 듣다, 얘기를 듣다’란 뜻이죠. “I’m sorry, 
I didn’t get the word.” “죄송합니다, 얘기를 듣지 못했습니다.” 뒤에 out이 와서 ‘get the word out’ 하면, 
‘말을 퍼뜨리다’란 뜻입니다. “The date is now set for the fundraiser, let’s get the word out.” 
“이제 모금 행사 날짜가 정해졌으니, 널리 알립시다.”
And she said, "I suppose you've heard about Alice"
“당신도 앨리스 얘기 들었죠?” 이렇게 말하더군요
Well I rushed to the window and I looked outside
창문으로 달려가서 밖을 내다봤어요
‘rush to~’는 ‘급히 움직이다, 급하게 서두르다’란 뜻인데요. 
“As soon as I heard the news that my Mom was very ill, I rushed to her house.” 
“어머니가 몹시 편찮으시다는 소식을 듣자마자, 어머니 댁으로 달려갔습니다.” “Don’t rush to any conclusions.
 We don’t know the whole story yet.” “성급하게 결론 내리지 마세요. 아직 사건의 전말을 모르잖아요.”
And I could hardly believe my eyes
내 눈을 믿을 수가 없었죠
hardly는 can이나 could와 함께 써서 ‘거의 ~할 수가 없다, ~하기 힘들다’란 뜻입니다. “I’m so sleepy. 
I can hardly keep my eyes open.” “너무 졸리네요. 눈 뜨고 있기 힘들 정도랍니다.”
As a big Limousine rolled up into Alice's drive
커다란 리무진이 앨리스네 집으로 들어오고 있었어요
limousine은 앞좌석과 뒷좌석이 분리돼있는 고급 승용차를 말하죠. 
보통 리무진이라고 하면, 8인승 또는 10인승과 같이 앞뒤로 긴 승용차를 떠올리는데요. 
미국에서는 고등학생들 졸업 무도회나 결혼식 때 이런 리무진을 많이 이용합니다. 
그런가 하면 공항 여객을 실어 나르는 버스를 limousine bus(리무진 버스)라고 부릅니다.
‘roll up’은 여기서 자동차가 굴러 들어오는 모습을 묘사하고 있죠. 
여기 ‘Alice’s drive’에서 drive는 진입로를 뜻하는 driveway의 준말입니다. 
driveway는 도로에서 집이나 건물까지 닿는 길, 진입로를 말하죠. 
“We share a driveway with our neighbor.” 
“옆집과 진입로를 같이 씁니다.”
네, 스모키의 노래 ‘Living Next Door to Alice’, 1절 가사 해석해 봤습니다. 
스모키는 영국 악단인데요. 지금도 활동하고 있지만, 1970년대 말이 스모키의 전성기였습니다. 
특히 한국에서 폭발적인 인기를 누렸는데요. 
당시 이들의 음반이 한국 팝 음반 사상 처음으로 1백만 장을 돌파하는 기록을 세우기도 했습니다. 
스모키는 초등학교 때부터 친구였던 크리스 노먼(Chris Norman)과 
테리 어틀리(Terry Uttley)가 주축이 돼서 결성했는데요. 
일리자베산스(The Elizabethans), 카인드니스(Kindness) 등으로 부르다가 
1975년에 스모키란 이름으로 첫 앨범을 냈습니다.

‘next door’는 옆집, ‘live next door’는 ‘옆집에 살다’란 뜻이죠. 
“Do you know who lives next door?” “누가 옆집에 사는지 아세요?” 
“Jane used be my next door neighbor, but she moved away a couple of years ago.” 
“제인이 우리 옆집에 살았었는데요, 2년 전에 이사 갔습니다.”
Twenty-four years just waiting for a chance
 24년 동안 기회를 기다렸어요
‘wait for~’는 ‘~을 기다리다’, ‘wait for a chance’하면 ‘기회를 엿보다, 
기회가 오길 기다리다’란 뜻이죠. “I’m waiting for a chance to talk to Mom about my poor grade.” 
“어머니에게 제 성적이 좋지 않다는 얘기를 할 기회를 엿보고 있습니다.”
To tell her how I feel and maybe get a second glance
내 감정을 말하고 혹시 나를 달리 봐줄 수 있을까 해서
여기서 ‘get a second glance’는 이제까지와는 다른 시선으로 보다, 이런 의미로 썼습니다.
Now I've gotta get used to not living next door to Alice
이제 나는 앨리스가 옆집에 살지 않는데 익숙해져야 해요
‘have got to~’는 전에도 여러 번 나온 표현인데요. ‘have to~’와 마찬가지로 ‘~해야 한다’란 뜻입니다.
 “I’ve got to be at work by 8 AM.” “오전 8시까지 회사에 가야 합니다.” 
또 be 동사 다음에 ‘used to~’가 오면 ‘~에 익숙하다’란 뜻이죠. 
“I’m used to getting up early.” “저는 일찍 일어나는 데 익숙합니다.”
네, 후렴구 해석해 봤습니다. 
스모키는 1975년에 ‘If You Think You Know How To Love Me
(당신이 날 사랑하는 방법을 안다고 생각한다면)’이란 노래로 주목을 받기 시작했고요. 
다음해 바로 이 노래 ‘Living Next Door to Alice(앨리스 옆집에 살면서)’로 미국과 아시아에 이름을 알렸는데요. 
이 노래는 영국에서 인기 순위 5위, 미국에서 25위에 올랐습니다. 
그리고 ‘What Can I Do(어떡하죠)’, ‘Mexican Girl(멕시코 소녀)’ 등을 연이어 발표해서 성공을 거뒀는데요. 
노래 담당이던 크리스 노먼은 영국 여자 가수 수지 콰트로(Suzi Quatro)와 ‘Stumblin’ In’이란 
노래를 함께 불러서 인기를 끌기도 했습니다.
 하지만 1980년대 들어 침체기에 들어가면서, 결국 악단을 해체했는데요. 
나중에 베이스 연주자 테리 어틀리를 중심으로 다시 모이지만, 
노래 담당이었던 크리스 노먼은 탈퇴해서 따로 혼자 활동합니다. 계속해서 2절입니다.

‘hold one’s head high’는 ‘머리를 자신만만하게 높이 쳐들다, 당당한 태도를 보이다’란 뜻이죠.

“비록 경기에서는 졌지만, 최선을 다했으니 당당해도 됩니다.”
Just for a moment, I caught her eye
아주 잠깐 앨리스와 눈이 마주쳤죠
‘catch one’s eye’는 ‘눈길을 끌다, 눈이 마주치다, 관심을 끌다’란 뜻이죠. 
“If you see our waiter, can you try to catch his eye to get our check?” 
“웨이터를 보면, 눈길 좀 끌어볼래요? 계산서 받게요.” waiter는 식당에서 일하는 남자 종업원을 말하죠. 
여자 종업원은 waitress입니다.
As the big Limousine pulled slowly out of Alice's drive
커다란 리무진이 천천히 앨리스네 집을 빠져나갈 때
‘pull out’은 ‘빠져나가다, 빠져나오다’란 뜻이죠. 
“I hit the side view mirror when I was pulling out of the garage this morning.” 
“아침에 차고에서 빠져나오다가, 자동차 측면 거울을 부딪쳤습니다.” 
‘Living Next Door to Alice(앨리스 옆집에 살면서)’, 2절이었습니다. 
이 노래는 닉키 친(Nicky Chinn)과 마이크 챕맨(Mike Chapman)이 공동으로 작사, 작곡했는데요. 
원래는 1972년에 호주 3인조 악단 뉴월드(New World)가 먼저 불렀습니다.
 하지만 4년 뒤에 스모키가 부른 노래로 전 세계에 알려집니다. 
특히 한국에서 인기가 대단했다고 말씀드렸는데요. 
덕분에 스모키는 2002년 한일 월드컵 때 유럽 지역 홍보대사로 선정됐고요. 
한국에서도 여러 번 공연했습니다.

샐리가 다시 전화해서 기분이 어떠냐고 물었죠

‘get over~’는 ‘~를(을) 극복하다, ~를(을) 잊다’란 뜻이죠. “It’s been six months since Mary 
and I broke up, but I still cannot get over her.” 
“메리와 헤어진 지 여섯 달이 됐지만, 아직도 메리를 잊을 수가 없습니다.” 
“I can’t get over how I missed such an easy shot.”
 “그렇게 쉬운 샷을 놓치다니, 자꾸 속상하네요.” shot은 테니스나 골프 등에서 한 번 치는 것을 말하죠.
She said, "Now Alice is gone but I'm still here
“이제 앨리스는 떠났지만, 나는 여전히 여기 있잖아요
You know I've been waiting for twenty-four years"
나도 24년 동안 기다려 왔어요”
And the big Limousine disappeared
그리고 커다란 리무진은 사라졌어요
네, 이웃집 여성을 오랫동안 짝사랑해온 남성의 가슴 아픈 사연을 담은 
‘Living Next Door to Alice(앨리스 옆집에 살면서)
’…… 24년 동안 옆집에 살면서 사랑을 고백할 기회를 엿보고 있었는데,
 어느 날 갑자기 앨리스가 멋진 리무진을 타고 떠나버린다는 거죠. 
리무진은 보통 결혼식 때 타니까, 앨리스가 결혼한다는 얘기 같기도 하고요. 
아니면 성공해서 멀리 떠난다는 얘기 같기도 합니다. 하지만 더 안타까운 건 샐리죠. 
샐리 역시 이 남성을 24년 동안 바라봐왔는데, 이제 앨리스가 떠났으니까, 
앨리스를 잊고 날 좀 봐달라고 말하지만, 이 남성의 귀에는 들리지 않습니다. 
마지막 후렴구를 보면, 결코 앨리스를 잊지 못할 거라고 말하네요.
