Rapid city growth means China faces rubbish crisis by 2020

China's fast-growing cities will no longer be able to cope with the amount of rubbish they produce by 2020, according to a government study. By that time the garbage produced annually by urban households and businesses in China will reach 400m tonnes, equivalent to the figure for the entire world in 1997, the China Daily reported.

A government environmental watchdog warned that inadequate waste management could result in methane explosions, the release of toxic gases and the pollution of water supplies. Guangzhou is spending 5bn yuan to build seven treatment plants by 2010, including one that is said to be the world's largest. But in other areas the only recycling is done by scavengers who sift through tips for bottles, cans and newspapers.

First there was iPod, now there's iPhone.

The next phase of Apple's plan to reinvent itself as a consumer electronics company was unveiled by Apple CEO Steve Jobs, and it received a warm reception from Wall Street. The touch-screen-controlled device plays music, surfs the Internet and delivers voice mail and e-mail differently than any other cell phone.

But it remains to be seen whether a $500 phone and some other gadgets will be enough for the company to remain a Wall Street darling and sustain the market dominance enjoyed by iPod, Apple's iconic digital music player. Others wonder whether the phone — despite its slim elegance and wide-screen monitor — is priced competitively.
