Summary:
Paul begins by introducing himself as an apostle appointed by God’s will, writing to believers who are faithful to Christ in Ephesus. He extends a blessing of grace and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus. He then breaks into praise, describing how God has poured out every spiritual blessing through Christ. Even before the world existed, God lovingly chose believers to belong to Him—set apart, cleansed, and destined for a life marked by holiness. Out of His kindness and purpose, God planned for them to be adopted into His family through Jesus. All of this, Paul explains, showcases the richness of God’s grace, freely given and overflowing to those who belong to His beloved Son.
Teaching:
We already exist as those who are in Christ. The very fact that we can live as the church and offer worship is itself evidence that we are in Christ and a testimony of His grace. Before the world was created, God already chose us in Christ; He already chose and called us. That is why He even declared us righteous.
Even so, we must continue to be transformed into a life that is holy and blameless before God. Although we have already received salvation, the life we live must continue to grow in holiness.
