Summary:
Paul explains that he has continually given thanks after hearing about the believers’ faith in Christ and their love for God’s people. He says he keeps praying for them, asking that God - the Father of glory - would grant them a deeper spiritual understanding. Paul desires that their inner eyes be opened so they can truly grasp three things: (1) the hope to which God has called them; (2) the rich and glorious inheritance God has prepared for His people; and (3) the immeasurably great power God exercises toward those who believe.
Paul emphasizes that this divine power is beyond ordinary strength, something only God can give and reveal.
Teaching:
The reason Jesus ascended into heaven was to appeal to God the Father to pour out the Holy Spirit on the disciples. The Spirit of wisdom and revelation is the Holy Spirit; He is the one who gives us wisdom and understanding. We must receive this Spirit of wisdom and revelation in order to truly know God.
Knowing God is not merely having information about Him in the mind. Truly knowing God means that His Word becomes the word of truth and the gospel of salvation to us - bringing forgiveness of sins, uniting us with Christ, and leading us to live according to God’s will.
The purpose for which God has called us becomes our inheritance. Our inheritance—our true riches - is what the Holy Spirit speaks to us in Christ.
God gives to us abundantly and overflowing. He wants us to understand how great the glory is in this Word we have received and in the work of God we carry out.
