Summary:
Paul describes how God displayed His mighty power by raising Christ from the dead and placing Him in the highest position of authority in the heavenly realm. Christ now stands far above every ruler, authority, power, and title - both in the present age and any to come. God has put everything under Christ’s feet and appointed Him as the supreme head over all things for the benefit of the church. The church is described as Christ’s body - filled and made complete by the One who fills all things in every way.
Teaching:
The reason our Lord Jesus died and rose again was to take authority over all things - to accomplish the will of God exactly as God intended. He now holds every rule, every authority, every power, and every dominion - not only in this present world but also in the world to come, governing everything that is named.
God’s plan, His purpose, and His will for the world are all carried out through the church. Everything God intends for creation is fulfilled through the church and within the church. And Jesus, as the head of the church, leads and directs it. This is why we must bow before Christ. For this reason, the church must not be bound by any earthly rule, authority, or dominion.
The church stands above all things, and Christ stands above the church. When the church is properly formed as the body of Christ, that church stands above all creation.
