Salote
selects
which trees
she wishes to use,
cuts them down, and
takes them home.
2
Once home
Salote
strips off the bark
from the tree
and
separates the outer
from the inner bark.
The outer bark
is discarded.
The inner bark
is soaked in the water
for one to two days.
3
After soaking
individual strips of inner bark
are beaten
with a mallet
on a log
to make them longer, longer and
wider.
4
Six individual strips of bark in the process of
becoming one.
Each strip
has been individually
soaked in water
and
beaten.
Now
they
are beaten out together
a number of times
to meld them together
into a larger durable single piece of masi.
5
Salote
makes a stain
from the bark of mangrove trees.
The bark is
broken up and
cooked over the fire
to
leach out its colouring.
6 -1
Masi
when first made
is inherently white.
Here
Salote
spreads out
a piece of masi kuvui
that
has been stained
for drying.
Kuvui today
is coloured by staining
as
an alternative to
the historical practice
of smoking the masi
over wood fires
producing
a dark chocolate brown colored masi.
Kuvui
means to smoke
and so
applies properly to masi coloured from smoke
from wood fires.
Modern stained masi
has
appropriate the name kuvui
even though
the colouring technique is different.
The resulting colour
is different as well;
this staining
produces
an orange brown
as
opposed to
a dark chocolate brown.
Modern kuvui
has
no alternative name
of its own.
6 - 2
♤Plain white masi,
called vulavula.
♤Decorated white masi,
called mesa
♤Brown masi,
called kuvui.
♤Yellow masi,
called rerega.
7
An example of masi kesa usually called Taunamuniviti.
This one
was presented to a groom on his wedding day.
His wife
had one
presented to her
as well.
Traditionally
they
would have been hung together
to devide their bedroom
on their wedding night.
On one side
the bride and groom
would sleep
on a bed
topped with
masi vulavula, or
pure white masi.
The aunties
would sit and sleep
on the other side
of the devider
and
the vulavula
checked in the morning
for proof of
consummation of the marriage
and
the wife's virginity.
Today
it is presented ceremonially
with the functional aspect being outdated.
8
Masi mesa.
a piece of masi also referred
to as kumi,
which means
it is decorative,
often
to be used
as a wall hanging.
This piece
is hanging on the wall
of a chiefly bure behind where
the chief sits.
It
bears
Tongan style influences
in design.
9
Another piece of masi kumi,
hanging on the wall
of the same chiefly bure
as
the picture top of page.
This piece
is
of Vatulele design.
10
This example of masi
is usually given
to celebrate
a birthday
or
special event
such as
the birth of child.
It is also referred to
as kumi as
it is intended to be used
as a wall hanging.
11
Masi daseni
are
smaller pieces of masi used for decoration,
for example
to cover
handbags, purses, fans and books,
popular for use
as bible covers,
and
on trays.
12
Types of dress
can also be special,
for instance
wedding dresses.
The groom
stands in the middle wearing
modern day kuvui.
The two young men
are wearing
a type of dress
of Vatulele design
that
is especially to be worn
in their role
as
the two best men
at the wedding.
13
Coasters with masi design are
a popular item
for visitors
to take home.
They
are
attractive functional reminders
of Fiji.
These coasters
belong to
the publisher
of this magazine.
When
shown to Salote
she
was most excited.
The larger plate coaster has
an old Vatulele Design called
vakatadamu.
It is design
used by
her great, great grandmother's generation
and
no longer in use.
The smaller cup coaster design
is
of a contemporary design called bele.
Both
are Vatulele design.
