-광복절에 취임한 이돈희 총재, 대한노인신문과의 특별한 인연을 말하다

이돈희 대한노인신문사 대표이사 사장 겸 수석논설위원 취임과 평생의 길

2025년 8월 15일, 성모 승천 대축일이자 광복절 80주년이라는 역사적 날에, 이돈희 임마누엘 UN 평화대사가 대한노인신문 대표이사 사장 겸 수석 논설위원으로 취임했다. 대한노인신문은 1991년 8월 5일, 노인사회와 언론의 선각자 이용만 회장(1914~2008)에 의해 창간된 대한민국 최초의 어르신 전문 대변지이다. 창간 34주년 기념일(8월 5일)이 아닌, 인류 보편적 의미가 큰 8월 15일을 취임일로 택한 것은 그만큼의 상징성과 무게감을 보여준다.

이돈희 대표이사 사장 겸 수석논설위원은 대한노인신문과 인연이 깊다. 2011년부터 14년간 수석부사장 겸 수석논설위원으로 활동하며 노인 권익, 효친경로 사상, 사회적 약자 보호에 힘써왔다. 또한 1960년대 학창 시절부터 ‘아버지날’, ‘노인의 날’, ‘세계어버이날’을 제정하는 데 앞장서며, 반세기 넘게 효문화 확산과 노인복지 운동을 이끌어온 인물이다.

그의 삶은 ‘도전’과 ‘헌신’으로 요약된다. 고등학생 시절부터 효친경로사상의 부활을 외쳤고, 대학생 때는 세계 최초로 ‘노인의 날 제정 취지문' 을 발표했으며, 이어 사회운동가ㆍ교육가로서 수많은 도전과제를 실천해왔다. 이러한 공로로 '한국전문언론인협회'로부터  『2025 대한민국 리더 100인』에도 선정되며 사회적 존경을 받았다.

『예수님 내면의 삶』 번역 발행 예정– 그리고 마지막 유업

이돈희 대표이사의 또 다른 업적은 가톨릭 영성 고전인 『예수님 내면의 삶(Vita Interna di Gesù Cristo)』의 한국어 번역 출간이다.  1,030쪽에 달하는 방대한 분량의 이 책은 예수 그리스도의 내면의 삶을 깊이 묵상하도록 돕는 고전으로, 이 한국어판은 그의 기획과 주도로 출판사 「휴먼컬처아리랑』에서 출간되었다.

그러나 여기서 멈추지 않는다. 그는 이 책을 세계적인 공용어인 영어로 번역ㆍ발행하여 전 세계에  선교ㆍ전도ㆍ보급하는 것을 “자신의 마지막 유업”이라 선언했다. 이미 2027년까지 영어판 발행을 목표로 준비 중이며, 이는 한국 출판계뿐 아니라 전 세계 기독교 신앙 공동체에 깊은 영향을 미칠 대작으로 평가된다.

이돈희 대표이사는 “저는 60 여년전 고등학생때부터 글쓰기가 좋아 여기까지 왔습니다. 그러나 이제는 단순한 글쓰기의 즐거움을 넘어, 18세기에 이틸리아 성 베드로 수도원의 원장 수녀님이자 성경기자인 마리아 세실리아 바이즈 수도자(1694-1766)에게 예수님의 직접 계시와 발현에 의한 말씀을 오랜동안 받아 기록ㆍ 저술하여 남긴 『예수님 내면의 삶』을 21세기 이후에 태어나는 『이 지구상의 모든 아들 딸들에게』 시공을 초월하시는 하느님께서 귀하의 부모님과의 합력으로 역시 이 지구상에 태어난 수만기지의 동물들 중, 오직 인간인 사람들에게만 주신, 이 지구보다  존귀한 영혼과 양심을 잘 지켜가며 살아가는,  아주 기본적인 효인 『효친경로사상의 부활을 위하여』 이 세상을 얼마동안 살아가다가 이 지구상에서는 물론,  하느님 나라에서도 영원한 구원을 받도록, 각자의 위치에서, 한 사람에게라도 더 예수님을 도서 선교전도하게 하는 것이  제 마지막 남은 육신의  사명”이라며, 우리 사람 모두가 외면의 가짜 신앙이 아닌 올바른 내면의 신앙과 효문화, 도전정신을 결합한 글로벌 비전을 밝히고 있다.

조영관 상임대표와의 만남 – 효문화의 뿌리를 잇다

최근 조영관 도전한국인본부 상임대표와의 만남은 더욱 특별했다. ‘어버이날 제정의 아버지’로 불리는 이돈희 대표이사와, ‘도전한국인 운동’을 이끌어온 조영관 상임대표의 대화는 효문화와 도전정신을 세계적으로 확산시키는 공동의 비전을 확인하는 자리였다.

조영관 상임대표는 “이돈희 총재님은 대한민국 정신의 뿌리이자 도전정신의 살아있는 상징”이라며 존경을 표했고, 이돈희 대표이사는 “조영관 상임대표는 차세대 도전정신의 계승자”라 답했다. 두 사람은 앞으로도 효문화 세계화, 청년 도전자 발굴, 글로벌 도전정신 확산을 위해 협력해 나갈 계획이다.

이돈희 대표이사의 좌우명은 명확하다. 효는 인류 보편의 가치이며, 도전은 이를 실천하는 삶의 방식이라는 것. 그는 “천주교 신자로서 애국심과 신앙심을 바탕으로, 『예수님 내면의 삶』 번역 출판과 선교전도 운동을 통해 선한 영향력을 확산시키겠다”며, “앞으로도 효문화와 도전정신을 결합한 글로벌 리더십으로 세계 평화와 공동 번영에 기여할 것”이라고 다짐했다.

그에게 이번 대한노인신문 대표이사 취임은 단순한 직책이 아니다. 평생 이어온 도전과 헌신의 집약이자, 마지막으로 세상에 남기려는 ‘신앙과 효, 도전정신의 유산’이다. 그리고 그 중심에는 『예수님 내면의 삶』 영어판 출간이라는, 21세기 아후의 인류 보편을 향한 최종적 사명이 놓여 있다.

Lee Don-hee Inaugurated as CEO of the Korea Senior Citizens' Newspaper and His Lifelong Path

On August 15, 2025, the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the 80th anniversary of Liberation Day, Lee Don-hee, Emmanuel UN Peace Ambassador, was inaugurated as CEO of the Korea Senior Citizens' Newspaper. The Korea Senior Citizens' Newspaper was founded on August 5, 1991, by Chairman Lee Yong-man (1914-2008), a pioneer in the elderly community and media, as Korea's first specialized senior citizen newspaper. The choice of August 15, a day of universal significance for humanity, rather than the 34th anniversary of the publication (August 5), as the inauguration day demonstrates its symbolic significance and significance.

Lee Don-hee has a deep connection with the Korea Senior Citizens' Newspaper. Since 2011, he has served as Senior Vice President and Chief Editorial Writer for 14 years, dedicated to the rights of seniors, the philosophy of filial piety for the elderly, and the protection of the socially vulnerable. He has also spearheaded the establishment of "Father's Day," "Senior Citizens' Day," and "International Parents' Day" since his student days in the 1960s, leading the spread of filial piety culture and the senior welfare movement for over half a century.

His life can be summed up in "challenge" and "dedication." From high school, he advocated for the revival of filial piety. As a college student, he published the world's first statement of purpose for "Senior Citizens' Day." He has since taken on numerous challenges as a social activist and educator. For these contributions, he was selected as one of the "100 Leaders of Korea 2025," earning him widespread public respect.

The Translation and Publication of "The Inner Life of Jesus" – and His Final Legacy

Another accomplishment of CEO Lee Don-hee is the Korean translation of the Catholic spiritual classic, "The Inner Life of Jesus (Vita Interna di Gesù Cristo)." This voluminous, nearly 1,000-page work, a classic that encourages deep reflection on the inner life of Jesus Christ, was planned and published by Human Culture Arirang, a publishing company he led.

But he doesn't stop there. He has declared retranslating and publishing the book in English and distributing it globally as "his final legacy." Preparations are underway to publish the English edition by 2027, and it is considered a masterpiece that will profoundly impact not only the Korean publishing industry but also the Catholic faith community worldwide.

Lee Don-hee stated, "I came here because I loved writing. However, now, my remaining mission is to go beyond the simple pleasure of writing and to widely share "The Inner Life of Jesus" with the world." He expressed his global vision, combining faith, filial piety, and a spirit of challenge.

Meeting with President Cho Young-kwan – Carrying On the Roots of Filial Piety Culture

My recent meeting with President Cho Young-kwan of the Challenge Korea Headquarters was particularly special. The conversation between President Lee Don-hee, known as the "Father of Parents' Day," and President Cho Young-kwan, who spearheaded the "Challenge Korea Movement," confirmed their shared vision of spreading the culture of filial piety and the spirit of challenge globally.

President Cho Young-kwan expressed his respect, saying, "President Lee Don-hee is the root of the spirit of the Republic of Korea and a living symbol of the spirit of challenge." President Lee Don-hee responded, "Chairman Cho is the next generation's successor to this spirit of challenge." The two plan to continue working together to globalize the culture of filial piety, discover young challengers, and spread the spirit of challenge globally.

President Lee Don-hee's motto is clear: Filial piety is a universal human value, and challenge is a way of life that puts it into practice. He pledged, "As a Catholic, grounded in patriotism and faith, I will spread positive influence through the translation and publication of 'The Inner Life of Jesus' and missionary work." He added, "I will continue to contribute to world peace and shared prosperity through global leadership that combines filial piety and a spirit of challenge."

For him, his appointment as CEO of the Daehan Senior Citizens' Newspaper is more than just a title. It is the culmination of a lifetime of challenges and dedication, and the final legacy he intends to leave behind for the world: a "legacy of faith, filial piety, and a spirit of challenge." And at its core lies his ultimate mission for all humanity: publishing the English edition of 'The Inner Life of Jesus.'
