1300 kg devil ray was caught in Pulau Ketam. Some local residents suppose it a bad omen while others alarm them to not be superstitious. However, Pulau Ketam earned bad fame for illegal immigrants and suffered unfortunate incidents and omens such as presence of Chinese hookers, "dog eats dog", "cousin kills cousin", suicide of a woman, etc.
I believe in omens. Not as if I see a black cat, someone's going to die but sometimes, old prophecies are correct in inexplicable ways. Well, since such a ray is very rare and the situation (that the morning it was about to be released, it died) also gives mysterious feeling.
However, its not a mere matter of being superstitious or not. If a omen is seen, no one should be terrified or ignore it but see what would cause disaster (for disaster cannot occur when everything is perfect. If something bad happens, there's background.) and try to prevent it, change the society's problem (what would cause government to be hostile to fishers? why a woman would kill herself?) and thus omen is not a prophecy but a warning and a chance to be changed.
