Summary:
The passage warns that those who live in sexual immorality, impurity, or greed show themselves to have no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God, for greed is treated as idolatry. Believers are told not to be deceived by empty words, because God’s wrath comes upon the sons of disobedience for such things. Therefore, they are not to join in with them. Instead, the readers are reminded that they were once darkness, but now they are light in the Lord, and so they are called to live accordingly as children of light. The life of that light is described by what it produces: goodness, righteousness, and truth.
Teaching:
The kingdom of Christ and the kingdom of God are one and the same. One who practices sexual immorality will not inherit the kingdom of Christ, that is, the kingdom of God.
Now we are called children of light. He says that we ourselves are light. What light do we have of our own? It is because our Lord Jesus has given us light that we shine. To be children of light means that God the Father, the Father of light, is our Father. Jesus Christ has become our light. By believing in Jesus, we have come to possess the light of God the Father.
Even if our faith is not perfect, and even if faults can be found in our words and actions, so that the devil accuses and condemns us, we are still children of light, and there is no need for us to be shaken by such accusations.
The fruit of the light is all goodness, righteousness, and truth.
