Summary:
Believers are told to keep learning what is pleasing to the Lord. They are not to participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but instead they are to expose them. The passage says that the things done in secret by such people are shameful even to speak about. Yet when such things are exposed by the light, they are made visible, because light reveals everything it shines on. For that reason, the passage calls for the sleeper to awake, rise from the dead, and receive the shining light of Christ.
Teaching:
In today’s passage, we are told to examine and find out what is pleasing to our Lord. In other words, we are to seek what pleases God the Father and our Savior Jesus Christ. This is true faith: loving God and desiring to do something for His joy and pleasure.
Only in the light can we see our reality properly. Darkness covers everything. That is why the children of light can rightly see the truth of the times. People of darkness cover over the truth of the age—they cover over sin and transgression as well.
Like Jesus, we too must reveal the true nature of this age. Apart from Christ Jesus, a person is one who is dying and is already dead. Because the heart is darkened by sin and trespasses and cannot respond to God, that person is dead.
Those who are awake know how to discern. They awaken in a dead world and exercise discernment. Therefore, we also must rise from our sleep.
