Summary:
The passage tells believers not to be drunk with wine, because that leads to dissipation, but instead to be filled with the Spirit. Out of that Spirit-filled life, they speak to one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with their hearts to the Lord. At the same time, they continually give thanks for all things in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father. In this shared life before God, they also submit to one another in the fear of Christ.
Teaching:
Can the Lord’s will be understood by our own thinking? We understand it when the Holy Spirit helps us, and when we are filled with the Spirit, He enlightens us and brings things to our remembrance. In that way, we come to understand what the will of the Lord is, and then we are able to recognize the opportunity before us.
If we read the Scriptures and believe in Jesus, should we not fear Christ? We ought to know how to fear Him—for He is the King of kings. He is the King before whom all the heavenly hosts and angels fall down.
As I fear Christ and as you fear Christ, we are told to submit to one another in that same reverence for Him.
