Summary:
Husbands are called to love their wives with the same kind of self-giving love that Christ showed for the church, a love demonstrated by giving Himself up for her. Christ’s purpose in doing so is described as making the church holy, cleansing her by the washing of water with the word, and presenting her to Himself in splendor - without stain, wrinkle, or any defect, but holy and blameless. In the same way, husbands are instructed to love their wives as their own bodies, because loving one’s wife is loving oneself. The passage explains that no one hates his own body but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, because believers are members of His body.
Teaching:
Husbands must give themselves wholeheartedly for their wives and children. When a man marries and becomes both husband and father, his life is no longer his own. He bears responsibility for his wife and for raising his children well.
If you truly love your wife, do not hold back your strength.
When a husband truly loves himself, he is loving his wife. To love one’s wife as oneself is to become one with her. When a husband willingly labors for his wife without sparing himself, unity is formed.
Do not place excessive demands on your wife. It is fitting for a wife to expect much from her husband. A husband’s calling is to love his wife, to nurture her, and to protect her as the head of the household.
Become husbands whom your wives can submit to and respect gladly. In that way, just as Christ and the church are one body with Christ as the head, husband and wife will become one and grow together.
