Summary:
Children are instructed to obey their parents in the Lord, because this is right. The command to honor father and mother is then highlighted as the first commandment accompanied by a promise, namely that it may go well with them and that they may live long on the earth. Fathers, in turn, are warned not to provoke their children to anger, but instead to raise them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
Teaching:
Here, “obey” carries the meaning of listening—listening carefully to what one’s parents say. Listening is obedience. When parents speak, children should not interrupt them, but listen to the end, even if they do not want to hear it or even if what is being said does not seem to make sense at first.
The passage says that this is right. To obey and honor one’s parents is righteous. It is by faith in Jesus that we serve and attend to our parents.
Although the passage speaks to both father and mother, only fathers are mentioned here because fathers are more often the ones who act harshly toward their children. Parents must not provoke their children to anger. They must not lead their children onto a wrong path.
Parents must truly be parents, and to be parents as they ought to be, they must raise their children only with the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
