Dieting and Staying Healthy
In news about health and medicine, recent findings show a growing number of Koreans believe they're overweight, even when they're actually under weight, leading to excess dieting which could harm their health. After years of calorie-counting obsessive exercise and comparisons to images seen in the media, Koreans have accrued an almost encyclopedic know-how about dieting and getting in shape. So much so that dieting has, especially in recent years, become a national fad.
"Statistics show that nearly 25% of Korea's total population feel they need to lose a certain amount of weight. And breaking that figure down, nearly 40% of Korea's teenagers feel they are also overweight." That's according to the Obesity Research Center (ORC) at Dongduk Women's University, which also says the weight loss obsession involves more than young Korean women. Children, men and senior citizens in greater numbers have been jumping on the bandwagon. And experts say this phenomenon is so concentrated around the matter of appearance, that often times people overlook the health issue.
The ORC report noted "Korea's standard of beauty has become very westernized recently. Beauty isoften labelled to the thinnest. This causes many people to believe that they are overweight. Many Koreans who are on some sort of weight loss program are actually under weight. It's a sad phenomenon. The standard of beauty is becoming one issue both the people and society need to think about."
But "trying" to lose 5-kilograms could mean almost anything. If the preferred method is to live on water and chewing gum for a fortnight, the dieter is almost certainly damaging the body. If however, the weight-watching regimen involves indulging in smaller pieces of sweets and light walking then you're probably on the right track. Researchers add that if you're overweight or seriously under weight, you are at increased risk of many serious health problems such as heart disease, diabetes type 2, cancer and osteoarthritis.
But to be free of these extra worries losing just 10-percent of the total body fat can measurably reduce the risk for serious health problems. That is to say excess dieting, keeping only the small body in mind and ignoring the bigger picture of overall soundness is the short cut to more harm than good.
