Summary:
Paul says that whenever he remembers the Philippians, he gives thanks to God for them. He prays for them with joy because they have shared in the work of the gospel from the beginning until now. He expresses confidence that God, who began His good work in them, will continue it until the day of Christ Jesus. Paul explains that it is right for him to feel this way about them, because they hold a special place in his heart. Whether he is imprisoned or defending and confirming the gospel, they share together in grace with him.
Teaching:
If it is not the gospel, we cannot win people. We cannot gain people merely through their favor, kindness, devotion, or sacrifice. Rather, as we proclaim the gospel, we also show kindness, devote ourselves, and make sacrifices, and through all these things working together, good is accomplished. Therefore, become someone who participates in the gospel or proclaims the gospel.
The beginning of participating in the gospel is church life. When we are in the church, we come to have the hope of our calling, God’s administration, and God’s plan. Through church life, we receive the Holy Spirit, and by the power of the Holy Spirit we accomplish the work God has given us. That work is spiritual warfare - to put on the full armor of God and live in the Spirit through prayer and supplication.
