Hexagram 3 : Water over Thunder(Zhun-Difficulty at the Beginning).....6
▣Six in the fourth position:
Riding on horseback and turuing back, seeking marriage.
Going forward brings good fortune; nothing is unfavorable.
[Explanation]
[Six in the fourth position] turns back on horseback; seeking a partner
for marriage(and coming on horseback) brings good fortune and nothing is unfavorable.
[Commentary]
After hesitating over which horse to ride,
line 4 turns back and rides[Nine at the beginning] (乘馬班如,승마반여-Sheng-ma-Ban-ru).
It has sought a partner for marriage(求婚媾,구혼구 - Qiu Hun Gou).
Going forward with an active stance to propose brings good fortune( 往吉,왕길 -Wang Ji),
and nothing will be unfavorable(无不利,무불리- Wu Bu Li).
Choosing a partner, seeking them out, and riding together does not violate etiquette;
rather, it is a wise and prudent action( 象曰 求而往 明也,상왈 구이왕 명야 - Commentary
on the Symbolism: Seeking and going forward shows clarity / wisdom).
Dongpo rejoiced, noting : "When unable to decide where to go,
[Nine at the beginning] comes to seek marriage―this is bound to bring good fortune.
'Sheng-ma Ban-ru(乘馬班如,승마반여)' means that when the gentle fourth line obtains
correctness(Zheng-正,정) but remains undecided between advancing and retreating
near King 5, it hastily goes to seek marriage with its proper match, [Nine at the beginning],
resulting in good fortune and nothing unfavorable.
The benevolence(Gotaek-膏澤,고택) symbolizing the statecraft of linw 5 has not yet solidified,
making it difficult to bestow favors onto those below.
Therefore, 'Sheng-ma Ban-ru(乘馬班如,승마반여)' is understood as a temporary heaitation
― a moment of temptation upon seeing the seat of powerful monarch.
In devising a plan to escape hardship, if one keeps etiquette simple and views concise,
the hearts of ruler and minister will align, ultimately bringing a wise and prudent resolution
free of trouble and filled with good fortune(求而往 明也,구이왕 명야- Qiu Er Wang Ming Ye).
This aligns well with the situation during King Wu's covenant assembly at Mengjin.
In the fourth line of the Hexagram Kan(重水坎卦,중수감괘 - Water over Water), it states :
"Even with a single cup of wine and two bamboo baskets, if sincere devotion is offeres,
it moves heaven and earth(六四 樽酒簋貳 用缶 納約自牖 終无咎, 육사 준유궤이 용부 납약자유 종무구
- Six in the fourth line : A cup of wine, two baskets of rice, using earthenware vessels,
introduced simply through the window; in the end, no blame),"
emphasizing the necessity of bright wisdom.
Even a single giass of wine and a simple dish of food would be regarded as an ideal
harmony between the firm(Yang) and yielding(Yin).
Here, Hou Ang offers a different perspective, viewing it as King Wen forming a marriage
alliance with King Di Yi of the Shang Dynaty― mounting[Nine at the beginning]
and dismiunting, before riding line 5.
In the I Ching, marriage can sometimes be viewed as a political marriage of strategy.
This applies when the Hexagram Zhun transitions into the Hexagram Sui(Sui-Following).
