Bible Matrix ⑦: Historical & Scientific Views on Daniel and Revelation
Part 2. Revelation
Revelation 2:18~29 - To the Church in Thyatira, adhered to the truth, but where false prophetess was active
Revelation 2:20 – By her teaching she misleads my servants into the eating of food sacrificed to idols
☞ Revelation 2:20 - Nevertheless, I have this against you: You tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess. By her teaching she misleads my servants into sexual immorality and the eating of food sacrificed to idols.(NIV); Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols.(KJV); "But I have this complaint against you. You are permitting that woman - that Jezebel who calls herself a prophet - to lead my servants astray. She teaches them to commit sexual sin and to eat food offered to idols.(NLT)
1) Jezebel’s teaching - Jezebel urged on Ahab to build temples and altars for the god Baal and the goddess Asherah, to teach the Israelites to worship them, to offer sacrifices and offerings to them, and to eat the food sacrificed and offered to them, not only in temples and altars, but also in home and community life.
2) Trade association as guilds - In the Middle Ages (AD 538~1,517), especially in the 11th~16th centuries, guilds which were associations of merchants and handicraftsman flourished. The guilds were strictly controlled by the Eastern Roman Empire(AD 395~1453) for financing and tax collection purposes, so they actively cooperated with the Emperor worship or sacrifices and offerings to pagan gods. Also in the case of handicrafts, based on the system of apprenticeship, a guild became a group that emphasized great importance on the hierarchy between craftsmen and apprentices. In particular, ‘a trade association as a guild’, which was organized to pursue common interests among people engaged in the same kind of field, was very famous.
3) Guilds and churches - It was common for these guilds to set up chapels in their parish churches for the use of their members. A guild member who established a chapel often became a patron saint of that area or church. The guild also carried out local charity projects, built schools and roads, held banquets for its members, and built and operated ‘a guild meeting hall building‘ for public affairs.
4) Joint religious services and feasts - Thus, the rules of these guilds, based on the control and/or close cooperation of the Eastern Roman Empire and the hierarchical order between craftsmen and apprentices, were well represented in group activities as joint participations in both worshipping and life. Those joint participations were joint religious services and feasts such as joint worship services, joint sacrifices, joint offerings, joint feasts, joint dinning or dinner parties, etc. The members of church influenced by these guilds naturally shared and ate the food sacrificed and offered to pagan gods. Accordingly, Christians, members of the guild and the church, ate these food sacrificed to idols not only in temples and altars, but also in general community life.
