Summary:
Paul urges the believers to conduct themselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether he comes to see them or remains absent, he may hear that they are standing firm in one spirit and striving together with one mind for the faith of the gospel. He tells them not to be frightened by their opponents, because such opposition is a sign of destruction for those who oppose, but of salvation for them—and this from God. For they have been granted not only to believe in Christ, but also to suffer for His sake, sharing in the same conflict which they saw in Paul and now hear to be in him.
Teaching:
Those who believe in Jesus belong to Him in their bodies. Whether we live or die, our bodies must live and die for Jesus—this was Paul’s faith, and it must become our faith as well.
When the body dies, judgment follows; therefore, faith is needed while the body is still alive. In other words, to believe in Jesus means to believe with our bodies while we are still living.
When we live according to the faith of the gospel, God recognizes such people, helps them, and fulfills His word in them. Living by faith is the work of salvation and the evidence of salvation.
And if we have received salvation, we are also to suffer for Jesus. To believe well in Jesus while the body is alive means to actively use our bodies with diligence.
Since Jesus bore the cross, we also take up the cross He has given us in order to gain more people.
