Restored rolls big guns in MRA Cup
The unfancied Restored staged a major upset in the $300,000 MRA Cup (1800m) on Sunday when he finished the best to deny odds-on favourite The Hornet by half-a-length. Prepared by Dr Yeoh Kheng Chye, the Red Ransom four-year-old hugged the rails from the jump and took the shortest way home in the straight to overhaul The Hornet and score in the moderate time of 1min 49secs. A winner at his only start in

But when he was entered in the MRA Cup, a race held in rotation among the four turf clubs under the Malayan Racing Association, most raised a query as to whether he could measure up to the class. With top guns like The Hornet, Ricoco, Jade and Ridden by the in-form John Powell, Restored was dropped back to the rear before quickly booting up on the fence to sit just off the slow pace dictated by Ricoco (Robbie Fradd) upfront. Keep Away (Oscar Chavez) was second outside Ricoco, with Gold Cup winner The pace quickened up by the side and as the field rounded the home turn, Ricoco was still holding sway. The Hornet issued his challenge down the middle while Restored who had stayed on the rails saw a wide gap presenting itself at the 300m. Powell did not hesitate a second and unleashed Restored who let down powerfully to level up with The Hornet who had hit the lead with 150m to go. The last 100m turned into a compelling showdown between the pair where Restored gradually got the upperhand to rally home with half a length to spare from a very gallant The Hornet. “I’m very happy for the owner, Mr YS Nam, a South Korean expatriate whose father owns many horses in “When the father visited “That’s how he came to buy Restored. I think he’s a very good horse and we will now give him a rest for a while. “He is a horse that can go for feature races and the
Powell, who is riding on the crest of a wave, was very enthusiastic about the winner’s gutsy performance. “He’s always been a very nice horse but it was a question mark whether he could compete against such horses,” said Powell. “He’s had a few starts over 1600m and I think he may have hit a flat spot at the last couple of races. He should get better as the distance gets further.”

The Hornet, whose main target this year is the Singapore Derby on July 12, pleased trainer Douglas Dragon with his brave effort, though the camp was all pining for a first-up since his fifth in last November’s Singapore Gold Cup. “My horse came on the outside whereas the winner enjoyed the inside run. They had the shortest trip, but Dr Yeoh’s horse is not a bad horse either,” said Dragon. “But it was a very encouraging first-up run from The Hornet and that first run should sharpen him up for his next races.” Da Silva was just as pleased with the son of High Yield’s run. "He tried hard but he just tired that last bit," said the Brazilian jockey. "I'm very proud of my horse the way he ran. "He's only a small horse and had a lot of weight today. The run will help him with his fitness." Da Silva, who picks up the occasional ride for Dr Yeoh, was quick to congratulate the trainer on his success. "He deserves the win," said da Silva. "Congratulations to him. It's an important win for him." The afternoon was a successful outing for the so-called “small trainers” in feature races as the earlier-run Group 3 Three Rings Trophy was captured by Mohd Yusof who saddled second favourite Huat Chai to an impressive last-to-first victory.
