Summary:
Paul urges the believers to continue working out their salvation with fear and trembling, just as they have always obeyed, not only in his presence but even more in his absence. He reminds them that it is God who is at work in them, both to will and to work for His good pleasure. He instructs them to do all things without grumbling or disputing, so that they may be blameless and innocent, appearing as lights in the world while holding fast to the word of life. In this way, Paul may have reason to glory that he has not run in vain or labored in vain. Even if he is being poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrifice and service of their faith, he rejoices and shares his joy with them, and he calls them also to rejoice and share their joy with him.
Teaching:
When we believe in Jesus, we have already received salvation. However, throughout our lives until the day Jesus returns, we continue to live in order to work out that salvation.
God, who has begun His good pleasure in us, is within us, and we simply need to follow Him as He carries out that good purpose.
Although we pray and hope for things for ourselves, our highest and greatest desire should be to fulfill God’s good pleasure. And just as God has gained us, this means that we also gain others.
To do this, we must be blameless even in the world. In our speech, actions, and even in how we earn and use money, there must be no fault found in us. We must also excel in the standards the world speaks of—ethics, morality, productivity, and efficiency. Because God is excellent, when we obey Him, we also become excellent.
The salvation Paul proclaims is to live in the world as God’s blameless children.
