Summary:
Paul expresses his hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to the Philippians soon, so that he may also be encouraged when he receives news about them. He explains that he has no one else like Timothy who is genuinely concerned for their welfare, since others seek their own interests rather than those of Christ Jesus. He reminds them that Timothy has proven his worth, having served alongside Paul in the work of the gospel like a child serving his father. Therefore, Paul hopes to send him as soon as he sees how his own situation turns out, and he is confident in the Lord that he himself will also come to them soon.
Teaching:
Church workers are those who care not only for their own affairs but also for the affairs of others. When doing the work of the church, there must be sincerity and wholehearted devotion like that of Timothy. Paul describes Timothy as having served the gospel with him like a son with a father.
In the church, the relationships among workers must be close and special in order to accomplish the work of the church. To win people, those who serve in the church must become one.
The relationship within the church is that of a family. Though we may live separately and have our own financial means, in the Lord we are family. Those who teach the word should do so with a father’s heart, and those who learn should receive it with a son’s heart.
The work of the church is ultimately the teaching of the Word. Other tasks simply support that primary work. The gospel, accomplished by the blood of Christ Jesus, is filled with the merit of the cross. Therefore, working for the sake of the gospel is what we are called to do.
