Summary:
Paul explains that although he has many reasons to have confidence in the flesh—being circumcised on the eighth day, belonging to the nation of Israel, a Hebrew of Hebrews, a Pharisee in regard to the Law, zealous as a persecutor of the church, and blameless in legal righteousness - he now counts all these things as loss for the sake of Christ. More than that, he considers everything to be loss compared to the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus his Lord. For Christ’s sake, he has suffered the loss of all things and regards them as worthless, in order that he may gain Christ and be found in Him, not having a righteousness of his own from the Law, but a righteousness that comes through faith in Christ - a righteousness from God based on faith.
Teaching:
The reason Paul once considered these things as gain but now counts them as loss is that, after coming to know Jesus and realizing His true worth, he came to regard what he once took pride in as a Jew as rubbish. This is because the knowledge of Christ is of the highest value.
For the sake of Christ—to know Him and to gain Him - Paul gave up everything he once boasted in.
Become a person of faith who can empty oneself and regard what one boasts in as worthless. To do so, you must receive the grace to see yourself in Christ.
