Monaco midfielder Olivier Kapo claims he was on the verge of signing for United in the January transfer window.

Kapo, primarily a winger, is currently on loan from Juventus. But the Ivory Coast-born French international has reportedly fallen out with Monaco coach Francesco Guidolin.

Sir Alex was looking to bring in another midfielder to bolster his depleted ranks.

"The most serious trail was Manchester United. It was almost settled," Kapo told L'Equipe TV. "I had my plane tickets to have the medical examinations on January 30 and sign the next day.

"But, for darker reasons that happened behind my back, it was not settled," he added.

United could have had a player going in the opposite direction across the English Channel, with Mikael Silvestre claiming he turned down a late move to French club Olympique Lyonnais.

"I had an opportunity to go to Lyon which I refused," Silvestre told MUTV. "I spoke to Gerard Houllier (Lyon manager) but I am cup-tied for the Champions League and we both know he is not going to play one person in the league and one in Europe.

"I wasn't going to have much opportunity, so I knew it wasn't a good move."
