In the presidential race, the big question today : How much benefit did John Kerry get from his Democratic Convention? Not much, according to an ABC News- Washington Post poll. It shows Senator Kerry with 49percent and President Bush with 47 percent of likely voters. That is a shift of six points in Kerry's favor in one week.
One of the smallest bounces for a challenger in 32 years. Many voters apparently have made their choices early and will not budge, a sign of a very polarized race.
Post-convention bounce or no bounce, John Kerry has gained ground on a number of issues. He's opened big leads on the handling of health care, education and even the economy as a whole. Indeed, among those who see the economy as the number one issue, it's Kerry by almost 2-1, after a virtual tie before the convention.
"I think Kerry's got the better economic plan. I think he believes in and knows us, at our level, much better."
Kerry has made headway on national security, too. Running about even with the President, on who can be trusted to handle the war on terror and the conflict in Iraq.
And Kerry, the Vietnam veteran, is now seen as the more qualified to be Commender-in-Chief of the military.
"John Kerry is probably a stronger leader. My biggest concern with Bush is I don't think he makes his own decisions."
The new poll also shows Kerry-backers intensifying their support of the Democratic nominee. And yet, the President is trouncing Kerry on the question of consistency.
"I think Bush sticks to what he believes in. I think Kerry flops around."
On overall leadership of the nation, the President has withstood Kerry's challenge.
"Bush shows strength. He's confident."
Finally, if the election were held today, it's true that Kerry would win, among registered voters. But among those most likely to vote, the worrisome fact for John Kerry is that after a week of primetime exposure and testimonials to his qualifications, this race for the White House remains too close to call.
