I watched the Lakers vs. Suns first round playoff series faithfully and thought it was one of the best first round matchups in recent history. I was extra interested given that I used to play for the Lakers and since two of my high school teammates played college basketball with Steve Nash at Santa Clara University. Kevin Dunne and Randy Winn were seniors when I was a sophomore at San Ramon Valley High School. The next year I watched them a lot at Santa Clara where along with Steve Nash they all helped Santa Clara's team to several years of greatness and some amazing upsets. I would have never thought at that time that I was watching one of the greatest point guards who would ever play in the NBA. It is amazing what hard work and perserverance can do and how Steve Nash's passing and shooting ability has changed the fortunes of an entire NBA franchise.

난 1라운드 레이커스대 선스 시리즈를 관심있게 보았고 최근 최고의 1라운드 메치업이라고 생각했다. 

난 좀 특별한 관심을 가졌었는데 그것은 내가 예전에 레이커스에서 뛰었었고 내 고등학교때 팀메이트들이 Santa Clara University에서 스티브 내쉬와 같이 뛰었기 때문이다. San Ramon Valley High School에서  Kevin Dunne and Randy Winn은 내가 1학년때 3학년였다. 그 다음해엔 몇년동안 난 그들이 Santa Clara에서 스티브 내쉬와 대단한 일들과 업셋을 해내는 것을 봤다. 그 당시에는 난 느바 역사상 최고의 포가중 하나를 보고 있었다고 생각하지 않았다.  기다림과 노력이 가져다 주는 결과와 내쉬의 패싱과 슈팅이 느바 프랜차이즈 전체의 운명을 바꿀수 있는지는 참 놀라운 것이다.

It was also great to see a couple of old friends play for the Lakers. Notably, it was a lot of fun to watch Kobe Bryant, Devean George, and Luke Walton make big plays for the Lakers and almost pull off a huge first round upset. Kobe Bryant never ceases to amaze me. Amost everywhere I go, people ask me what it was like to play with Kobe Bryant. Random people I have never met ask me the question. I thought that now would be a good time to talk about my interactions with Kobe on and off the court. When I first got to LA, I remember meeting Kobe in the training room. Kobe was there with his personal trainer and the first thing I thought in my mind is "Wow, Kobe must really be 6'7"!" You never really know how tall people are until you're next to them. Shaq is definitely 7'1" and Kevin Garnett is definitely taller than 6'11". Kobe is easily 6'7" and it's crazy because I play center in the NBA sometimes and I'm about 6'8" and Kobe can play point guard and he's basically the same height. The first year I was there, I can't tell you how many times I came into the game and Kobe tried to get me a dunk or a wide open layup to help me build some confidence. One time after a tough game at Memphis he invited me to meet up with him and his high school buddy for a steak dinner. Another time he stayed around after a game to meet up with the ten year old daughter of a buddy of mine for an autograph and a photo. Still another time when I was upset about a certain on-court team issue, Kobe took the time to listen to everything I was going through and tried to help the situation. Kobe Bryant went out of his way a lot when I was just figuring out what it was like to play in the NBA.

레이커스의 옛 친구들이 뛰는 것을 보는것도 즐거운 일이었다.  특히, 코비, 게오르게, 루크가 레이커스를 위해 빅 플레이를 하고 거의 업셋을 이뤄내는 것을 보는 것은 정말 재밌었다.  코비는 정말 날 끊임없이 놀라게 한다.  거의 내가 어디를 가는지 사람들은 코비와 같이 뛰는게 어땠는지를 물어본다.  한번도 만난적 없는 뜬금없는 사람들이 물어본다.  

   내가 처음 LA에 갔을때, 코비를 트레이닝 룸에서 본걸 기억한다.  코비는 그의 개인 트레이너와 같이 있었고 맨 처음 내가 생각한 것은 "와~~~ 코비가 진짜로 6'7"정도 되겠는걸???"이었다.   사람 옆에 서 보기전엔 그사람이 얼마나 큰지 당신을 잘 모를것이다.  샼은 확실히 7'1"이고 가넷은 확실히 6'11"보다 더 크다.  코비는 쉽게 6'7"이 된다.  아주 미치는 일이지... 왜냐면 난 NBA에서 가끔씩 센터를 보기도 하는데 난 겨우 6'8"이니까 말이다.  코비는 포인트 가드를 볼수도 있다....나와 가의 같은 키로 말이다.  

    내가 LA에 간지 첫해에...게임에 들어가서 코비가 얼마나 내 자신감을 심어주기 위해 나에게 덩크와 오픈 레이업을 만들어 줄려고 노력했는지 말로 다할수 없다.  한번은 아주 힘든 멤피스 게임이 끝나고 그는 나를 자기 고등학교 동창과 같이 스테이크 저녁에 초청했었다.  또 한번은 내 친구의 열살짜리 딸래미와 사진과 싸인을 해주기 위해 기달려 주었었고 말이다 (경기후 이야기인듯...)  그리고 내가 코트 안에 있었던 일로 화가 나있을때 코비는 시간을 내주어 내가 어떤 일을 겪고 있는지 다 들어주었고 그 상황을 도와주었다.  코비 브라이언트는 자기 자신의 길에 벗어나면서까지 내가 NBA에서 뛰는게 어떤것인지 알수 있도록 도와주었다.

I felt badly after the game 7 loss that some members of the media tried to criticize Kobe for not shooting enough in the loss to the Suns. It's extra interesting to me, because I watched that game very closely and analyzed the Suns' defensive schemes against Kobe. In the first half it seemed like Suns threw a "soft double team" at Kobe whereas in the second half they trapped Kobe aggresively with two men and forced him to throw the ball out of the double team. I actually thought that Kobe was doing a good job of trying to hit his open teammates but their shots weren't falling. I guess if you are Kobe Bryant and you get 81 points you get criticized for shooting too much and if you only score 20-25 points then people say you are not shooting enough. I thoroughly enjoyed the series and watching my old teammate Kobe play so well. I think that the Lakers are back on the map. I hope I get to see Devean George this summer in Minnesota and maybe I'll see Luke Walton at some Pac-10 reunion. (We never really had the Answer for Arizona basketball when I was at Stanford). At any rate, I still hope we go 4-0 against the Lakers next season and 4-0 against the Suns.

  난 게임 7에서 지고 나서 일부 미디어에서 코비가 슛을 많이 쏘지 않았음을 비판하는 것에 대해 참 기분이 상했다.  그것은 나에게 대단히 신기한 일이었다. 왜냐면 난 그 게임을 아주 주의깊게 지켜봤고 코비에 대한 선스의 수비 전략을 분석했었기 때문이다.   전반엔 선스는 "약한 더블팀"을 코비에게 던졌고 후반엔 코비를 두명으로 아주 강하게 트랩했으며 공을 더블팀 밖으로 빼내게 압박했기 때문이다. 

   난 사실 코비가 오픈된 선수들을 찾아내는 걸 잘하고 있었다고 생각했다.  그들의 샷이 안들어 갔을 뿐...   만일 너가 코비 브라이언트라면 너가 81점을 넣고도 슛을 너무 많이 쐈다고 비난 당하며...만일 너가 20-25점만 넣었다면 사람들은 너가 너무 안쐈다고 할껀가 보다.   난 그 시리즈를 즐겼고 예전 팀메 코비가 잘하는걸 보는게 좋았다.  내가 생각하기엔 레이커스는 다시 지표에 올라섰다.  

    데빈 게오르게가 이번 여름에 미네소타에서 볼수 있었음 좋겠다...그리고 루크와 어쩜 Pac 10 모임에서 볼수 있을찌 모르겠다.  (내가 스탠포드에 있었을땐 우린 아리조나 농구에 정말 해답이 없었다). 

    어찌됐던~  내년엔 우리가 레이커스에게 4-0으로 선스에게도 4-0으로 이기길 바란다.

매드슨하면 생각나는 일화가 몇 개있는데요. 하나는 예전에 2연속 자유투 에어볼 쐈던거구 다른 하나는 예전 선즈에 마버리 있었을때 보통 선수들 자유투쏠때 동료들하고 하이파이브 하잖아요 그때 마버리가 그거 하려구 손 내밀었는데 매드슨이 손벽쳐준거-_- 마버리도 당황했는지 웃었더라는 그 얘기 잊을수가 없네요.

매드슨하면 참 정감이 가는 선수인데.. 참 성실한 선수이고.. 03년 여름 그가 FA로 미네소타로 이적하면서 이런말을 남겼죠.. 기자가 당신은 이제 레이커스 선수가 아닌데 왜 레이커스 선수로 연습하냐라고 묻자 왈 "비록 팀은 떠나지만 지금현재까지는 레이커스의 선수다.. 당연히 선수가 연습에 빠지면 되는냐?"라고 했죠
