Summary:
Paul, writing as an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, opens the letter together with Timothy, whom he identifies as their brother. He addresses the recipients as holy and faithful brothers and sisters in Christ who are in Colossae.
He greets them with a blessing: grace and peace from God their Father. The opening presents the letter as coming with apostolic authority, shared Christian fellowship, and a warm blessing directed to believers who belong to Christ and live in Colossae.
Teaching:
Paul’s letters first speak about Paul’s apostleship, and then about the will of God—God’s economy or divine administration. The main work of God is to gain people for Himself.
Paul also emphasizes how those who have been saved are to live by faith, and he urges believers to bring their salvation to completion.
The “holy people of God” and the “people belonging to Christ” refer to the same people. They are all people who are in Christ. In terms of one’s relationship with Jesus, being close to Jesus means being in Him; being far from Him means being outside of Him.
The condition of our faith reveals the condition of our relationship with Christ. As we continue reading the Word, we should examine our relationship with Christ, find the right direction, enter more deeply into Christ, and live as people who belong to Christ.
