Watching the television, one would think the world is full of picture-perfect women. In reality, it has become common for entertainers, especially females, to improve their appearances through plastic surgery. And unlike in the past, many are quite open about it.

American supermodel Cindy Crawford, 40, recently told a U.K. daily that she has been receiving cosmetic surgery for the past 11 years.

"I'm not going to lie to myself: past a certain age, creams work on the texture of your skin, but, in order to restore elasticity, all I can really count on are vitamin injections, Botox and collagen," Crawford said.

In Korea as well, more entertainers are being up front about going under the knife. This is a change from the past when surgeries were usually done abroad and kept secret from the public.

"I don't think it's strange at all to tell people about receiving plastic surgery," said Han Jin-a, a 17-year-old high-school student in Seoul. "I appreciate it when entertainers speak honestly of getting plastic surgery. I believe trying to look younger and more beautiful is necessary for entertainers."

Some, on the other hand, are concerned about celebrities admitting to cosmetic surgery. They believe that celebrities usually have a great influence on society, especially relating to apperances. Celebrities’ upfront views of getting plastic surgery can make young people think it is socially acceptable or even necessary, they say.

Cosmetic surgery is becoming more common among ordinary people, even teenagers. A survey of 10 cosmetic-surgery hospitals in Seoul said that as much as 15 percent of the patients are in their teens.
The trend has become so popular that even parents are approving of their children getting plastic surgery. In fact, cosmetic surgery is increasingly popular as a graduation or birthday gift.

“We have seen a sudden rise in the number of teenagers who are seeking operations. I think it’s largely becuase celebrities are admitting to their operations and making it seem accessible to teenagers,” Choi Joon-yong, a plastic surgeon at a clinic in southern Seoul, however, emphasized that, “Those under 17 who go through plastic surgery will likely suffer from side effects from the operations, and so whoever is considering plastic surgery needs to think carefully about it.”

As Choi said, there are some risks involved in plastic surgeries. While cosmetic surgery can be positive and life-changing, failures are not uncommon. Often enough, surgeries result in unwanted outcomes that can scar a person for life. In some unfortunate cases, people have even died during the surgical process. Those who are contemplating cosmetic surgery are strongly recommended to seek out properly trained, competent surgeons and not be deceived by "discount" doctors.

Addiction to cosmetic surgery is another possible consequence. Cosmetic surgeons say many who once had a cosmetic surgery come back repeatedly to have surgeries performed on other parts of their bodies.

Cosmetic surgery should not be undertaken lightly. It is important that you do not feel pressurised or obliged to have it. It should be a decision you take only after a lot of careful thought and questioning. If you have been considering cosmetic surgery because of employment issues , you may want to consider alternatives such as career counselling.
