Summary:
Paul explains that Tychicus will inform the believers about his circumstances. Paul describes Tychicus as a beloved brother, faithful servant, and fellow bond-servant in the Lord, showing that he is a trusted messenger and coworker. Paul is sending him specifically so that the Colossians may know how Paul and his companions are doing, and so that their hearts may be encouraged.
Paul also says that Onesimus will come with Tychicus. Onesimus is described as a faithful and beloved brother who is one of their own. Together, Tychicus and Onesimus will tell the Colossians everything that is happening where Paul is. The focus of the passage is therefore on faithful messengers, trusted fellowship, and the encouragement that comes through sharing the circumstances of Paul’s ministry with the church.
Teaching:
A pastor cannot be perfect. However, a believer who is regarded as good by the pastor cannot be a bad believer in the eyes of God. The two people whom Paul commends here are good workers of the church.
Faithfulness is closely related to faith itself. It is not a faith that is conscious of people or dependent on human approval, but a faith that reads and receives the words of Jesus and welcomes Jesus Himself. This kind of faithfulness is what carries us forward from salvation to salvation.
Without faithfulness, our confession and our actions are nothing more than an empty shell. This faithfulness reveals the nature of our relationship with Jesus, whom we believe in.
Therefore, let us all become faithful believers as we become fellow servants together in Christ. And let us become holy people of God who are worthy of commendation from our pastor.
