Summary:
Paul sends greetings from several coworkers who are with him. Aristarchus, his fellow prisoner, sends greetings, along with Mark, the cousin of Barnabas. Paul notes that the Colossians have already received instructions about Mark, and if Mark comes to them, they are to welcome him. Jesus, who is called Justus, also sends greetings. These men are identified as being from the circumcision, and Paul says they are among the only fellow workers for the kingdom of God who have been a comfort to him.
Paul then mentions Epaphras, who is one of the Colossians’ own. Epaphras is described as a servant of Christ Jesus who is always laboring earnestly for them in his prayers. His prayer is that they may stand mature and fully assured in all the will of God. Paul bears witness that Epaphras has deep concern not only for the believers in Colossae, but also for those in Laodicea and Hierapolis.
Luke, the beloved physician, and Demas also send greetings. Paul then instructs the Colossians to greet the brethren in Laodicea, as well as Nympha and the church that meets in her house. Finally, Paul directs that once this letter has been read among the Colossians, it should also be read in the church of the Laodiceans, and that the Colossians should likewise read the letter coming from Laodicea. The passage centers on fellowship among Paul’s coworkers, prayerful concern for the churches, and the shared reading of apostolic instruction among the believers.
Teaching:
The names mentioned in today’s passage are remembered by Paul. If a pastor does not remember the names of the holy people of God, it may indicate that their church life is not as it should be. Whether a pastor remembers the holy people of God depends on their partnership in ministry.
Therefore, like the names mentioned in today’s passage, let the holy people of God become people whom their pastor can one day introduce and commend. That is the fruit and pride of the pastor, and it is also their glory.
