Summary:
Paul gives a direct instruction concerning Archippus, urging him to take heed to the ministry he has received in the Lord and to fulfill it. The emphasis is on faithfully carrying out a responsibility that has been entrusted by the Lord.
Paul then closes the letter with a personal greeting written in his own hand. He asks the believers to remember his imprisonment, bringing attention once more to his chains. The letter ends with a blessing of grace upon them. The passage concludes with a solemn reminder of ministry responsibility, Paul’s personal suffering, and the grace of God resting upon the church.
Teaching:
In today’s passage, the word “fulfill” means to fill up or carry through to completion. To fulfill the ministry we have received is part of working out our salvation. Just as water is gradually poured into a cup until it is filled, fulfilling one’s ministry means continuing to carry out the work entrusted to us. It is the process of accomplishing the work of the church.
For such a person, salvation being worked out becomes the output and the fruit. The act of filling up the work God has given us reflects the image of the new self. That is why we are renewed into the new self, even reaching true knowledge.
