Paul tells the Thessalonian believers that there is no need for him to write further about brotherly love because they have been taught by God to love one another. Their love is already evident toward all the brothers and sisters throughout Macedonia. Even so, he encourages them to excel still more in this love.
He then urges them to make it their ambition to live quietly, attend to their own responsibilities, and work with their own hands, just as he had instructed them. By living in this way, they will conduct themselves properly toward outsiders and avoid being dependent on others. The passage emphasizes a life marked by increasing love, quiet diligence, personal responsibility, and honorable conduct before those outside the faith.
