외국인에게 애인을 소개할 때 혹시 ‘lover’라는 표현을 사용하신 적은 없으신가요?
물론 ‘lover’라는 단어는 영한사전에도 ‘애인’이라고 나오지요. 그러나 무심코 외국인에게 애인을 소개할 때
‘She/ He is my lover’ 라고 표현했다면, 그 외국인은
황당해 하면서도 야릇한 표정으로 당신을 쳐다볼 것입니다.
왜냐하면
lover는 애인이라는 뜻보다는 성적 관계를 갖는 sexual partner라는 의미가
더 강하기 때문입니다.
우리말의 ‘애인’과 가까운 표현은 오히려 boyfriend 또는 girlfriend이지요.
이들 단어 역시도 우리는 아무에게나 마구 붙이는 경향이 있지만…
boyfriend
또는 girlfriend를 사전적인 의미로만 보면 남자 친구 또는 여자 친구가 되니까 이를
이성간의
단순한 친구라고 이해하기 쉬우나 실제 영어 표현은 그렇지 않습니다.
(If you say ‘lover’ to a native English speaker, he or she will probably look
at you strangely.
‘Lover’ does not mean someone who loves you or someone that
you love.
‘Lover’ means sexual partner. ‘Lover’ is not an acceptable word to
use. Use ‘boyfriend’ or ‘
girlfriend’ instead.)
첫댓글 friend 와 girlfriend/boyfriend의 차이점은 같이 잤냐 안잤냐도 포함...
물론 초등은 예외겠지만, 끼리 키스 정도하고 교실 앞에서 개인적으로
기다리는 정도하면 girlfriend/boyfriend 라 하는 것같아요...
특별한 약혼식은 없지만, 반지를 주고 청혼을 하고, 허락했으면 'fiance'
같이 동거하더라도, 목사나 판사 또는 동등한 자격이 있는 분 앞 에서 부부선서 후
결혼선언서에 사인을 받아 혼인신고 하지 않았으면 그냥 boyfriend/girlfriend 혹은 fiance...
Many thanks for your supplementary explanation which is very informative.
touse를 설명해 주세요 to use인지 아님 다른 멋진 말인지 ㅎ
Well, I understand that your request is meant for a sensual joke...
No need to answer you, accordingly...^^
@이젠백 sensual joke??
Why you said that?
@하늘을나는 Please pay keen attention to the phrase “to use” among the sentence
‘Lover’ is not an acceptable word to use” in above-quoted text.
I believe you know the meaning the word “touse” of which spellings are exactly same as
“to use” but has different meaning (handle roughly)
If you’re still in question, Mr.정담 is requested to answer in more details instead of me...^^
@이젠백 So.. as I understood
you meant to say 'to use'..
There are few more you put two words together which I and most of us understood as typing mistakes.
lookat = look at
thatyou = that you
touse = to use
But I still didn't get it why you pick
the word 'sensual'to use.. 😎
@하늘을나는 As a matter of fact, he (정담님) was not meant for speaking of possible typographical mistake or the likes.
It’s my understanding that he made a witty request for my posting because the he knew the word “touse”,
focusing on the hidden meaning of “lover” (viz., sexual partner).
Don’t you think the word "tosue" can be used to express a certain action of making love?
That’s why I mentioned that he made a sensual (sexual) joke...^^
@이젠백 Hmm... Well..
If I'm not wrong I don't think that the word 'touse' has sensual meaning... I would never use it like that. As a matter of fact that word is not used in a conversational manner.
Maybe I'm wrong... ^^
@이젠백 It's simple! The word was new to me and dictionary has no answer to my question cuz it says 'struggle' but not good in grammar. Anyway thanks to your discussions i'll never forget the word - touse ㅎㅎㅎ
Thank you..
Good lesson..
Use this word in conversation carefully.
I wish I had the least chance to use the word “lover” regardless of its original meanings, correct or not …^^
이젠백 방장님,
He is not only my lover but also my boyfriend h~ k~
Thank you.
Gosh!!
You did change your pen name into “좋아요” from “류쿠란” without any pre-notice.
Anyway it's 좋아요...^^
boyfriend 가 우리말과 다르게 남자애인이었군요. 오늘도 덕분에 배우고 갑니다
My pleasure~
